Fernandez de Oliveira and Ortiz to Play on PGA TOUR at Mexico Open
FAYETTEVILLE – Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira will reap another benefit from winning the 2023 Latin America Amateur Championship as the Razorback senior earned a sponsor’s exemption on this week’s PGA TOUR stop at the Mexico Open at Vidanta. He will join #ProHog and 2019 LAAC Champion Alvaro Ortiz in the field, who also earned a sponsor’s exemption and tied for 42nd at last year’s event.
The Mexico Open, featuring world #1 John Rahm, begins Thursday (April 27) and runs through Sunday. It will be played at the 7,456-yard, par-71 Vidanta Vallarta Course at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.
This marks the second of four events this year that Fernandez de Oliveira will face some of the world’s best golfers. Previously, he earned an invitation to The Masters and later he will play in The Open Championship and the U.S. Open. Fernandez de Oliveira is one of three amateurs in the field, joining UCLA sophomore Omar Morales (Mexico) and Oregon sophomore Jose Christobal Islas (Mexico). Morales also played in the same field with Fernandez de Oliveira this past fall at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational.
Fernandez de Oliveira will play with Boo Weekley and Vincent Norman in the first two rounds. The group will start on #10 tee at 9:46 am (CT). For round two, they will start on hole #1 and tee off at 2:51 pm (CT).
Ortiz, who plays on the PGA TOUR Latinoamerica, is teamed with Aaron Rai and Michael Gligic. They will start on hole 10 at 2:29 pm (CT) on Friday and on hole 1 at 9:24 am (CT) on Friday.
The Mexico Open will be streamed on ESPN+ and Peacock and available on the Golf Channel Thursday at Friday from 2:30-5:50 pm (CT). Third and fourth round coverage will be on CBS from 2-5 pm (CT).
