Fland Named SEC Freshman of the Week

FAYETTEVILLE – Boogie Fland led Arkansas in both scoring and assists in victories over #14 Michigan and UCA to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the league announced today.

Fland averaged 18.0 points, 8.0 assists and 3.5 steals in the two wins.

First, Fland excelled as he returned to his hometown and was able to play in historic Madison Square Garden for the first time. He scored 20 points with seven assists, against just one turnover, and two steals in the win. More specifically, Fland scored 16 of his 20 points and dished out five of his seven assists as Arkansas turned a 15-point deficit into an 18-point lead. Overall, Arkansas out-scored Michigan 57-24 over a 15:51 span to take that 18-point lead.

Versus UCA, Fland had 16 points, a career-high nine assists, a career-high five steals and five rebounds. He set the tone early with back-to-back steals and layups to put the Razorbacks up 22-7. He finished the first half with 13 points to give Arkansas a 46-28 lead at the break. In the second half, Fland only took three shots, making a 3-pointer, and had six assists in the period. Fland became the first Razorback since Kareem Reid in 1997 to have at least 13 points, seven assists, five steals and five rebounds in a game.

Fland now ranks second in the SEC and 30th in the NCAA in assists per game (5.7), fourth in the SEC and 44th in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio (2.86) and 17th in the NCAA in scoring (15.5 ppg).

Among NCAA freshmen, Fland is second in assists at 5.73 (BYU’s Egor Demin averages 5.75) and third in assist/turnover ratio at 2.86.

Fland and the Razorbacks return to Bud Walton Arena to host North Carolina A&T on Saturday (Dec. 21). Tipoff is set for 1:30 pm and the game will be televised on SEC Network.
