Former Razorback All-American Adrians Zguns Named Men's Tennis Assistant Coach
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Men’s tennis head coach Jay Udwadia has named former Razorback standout Adrians Zguns as an assistant coach.
“It’s amazing to bring a former Hog back to Fayetteville and it was evident while talking to him how passionate he is for the Razorbacks and how much he wants to coach here,” Udwadia said. “We are lucky to have a person like Adrians join our program once again and to welcome a member of the Razorback family back to Northwest Arkansas.”
Zguns starred for the Razorbacks from 2002-06, amassing many individual records as well as leading the Hogs to NCAA Tournament appearances in three of his four years.
Zguns is currently in the top six for several program records, including third in all-time singles wins (104), fourth in single-season singles victories (36, 2004) and sixth in career singles win percentage (.697).
“I am excited to return to the place that molded me into the person I am today,” Zguns said. “I am grateful to now have the honor and responsibility of helping develop the next generation of Razorback tennis.”
In his senior year, Zguns helped the Hogs advance to their first and only Sweet 16 since the NCAA Tournament expanded in 1999. In addition, he earned several individual awards including winning SEC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 7, 2006, as well as finishing First Team All-SEC for the second time in his career. Following his run to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships, Zguns was named an ITA Singles All-American and his 26-12 record contributed to his year-end ITA ranking of No. 18.
As a junior, Zguns posted an 18-14 overall record in singles play. His 2005 season was highlighted with a trip to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Doubles Championships while concluding the year ranked No. 25 alongside Rohan Gajjar.
In 2004, Zguns led the Razorbacks in overall singles victories behind a 36-10 campaign. Zguns closed the season with an appearance in the second round at the NCAA Singles Championships and earned First Team All-SEC honors. Zguns ended his sophomore season at No. 23 in the final ITA singles rankings.
As a freshman for the Hogs, Zguns was named ITA Central Region Rookie of the Year after an impressive 24-9 record in singles play.
Zguns became the first Razorback to receive the prestigious Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship Award in both 2005 and 2006. The award honors players for sportsmanship, character, academics and outstanding tennis accomplishments in memory of collegiate tennis great Rafael Osuna.
