
Four Razorbacks advance to Eugene on NCAA West first day
COLLEGE STATION – Opening day at the NCAA West First Round on Wednesday had three Razorbacks advancing to Eugene in the long jump while Timothy Chesondin claimed the final spot to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000m.
In addition, Arkansas had 13 entries move on to Friday quarterfinals in five events.
Uroy Ryan led the long jump trio with a mark of 25-8 (7.82) that ranked seventh overall. Freshman Juriad Hughes, Jr., placed ninth overall with a career best of 25-4 (7.72) as he competed in the second of four flights.
Henry Kiner tied for the final 12th place to advance to Eugene with a mark of 24-11.75 (7.61) and needed a secondary mark of 24-9.25 (7.55) to break the tie with Kavian Kerr of Nebraska, who had a secondary mark of 24-2.25 (7.37).
Chesondin posted a time of 28:23.00 to secure 12th place in the 10,000m with a bit of a gap over Mohamed Guled of Utah Valley, in 13th place with a 28:29.06.
Jordan Anthony, Connor Washington, and Tevijon Williams each moved on to quarterfinals in both the 100m and 200m.
Anthony led the 100m field with a 10.08 (1.3 wind) while Washington finished runner-up in the same heat with a 10.19 that ranked third best overall. Williams placed second in his heat with a 10.38 that ranked 15th overall.
In the 200m, Anthony and Washington both registered times of 20.50 to win separate heats into head winds of -1.7 for Anthony and -0.7 for Washington. Williams placed third in another heat in 20.74, which was 14th overall.
The 1,500m had Davis Helmerich earning an auto qualifier in 3:45.17 to the quarterfinal while Reuben Reina collected a time qualifier in 3:45.24 as they placed fifth and sixth in the third heat.
A trio of Razorbacks moved on in the 400m as Jaden Smith led the way with a 46.01. He was joined by Steven McElroy (46.20) and TJ Tomlyanovich (46.49).
Rivaldo Marshall (1:47.62) and Tyrice Taylor (1:48.20) each won a heat of the 800m to reach the quarterfinal stage. Marshall was initially disqualified for impeding, but a successful protest had him reinstated.
