Freshmen Sweep First Day At Regionals
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Action at the ITA Central Regional Championships began Thursday at the Baseline Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota, as all four Arkansas freshman combined to go 4-0 on the opening day.
Jose Alonzo started the day with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Alex Pozo (UMKC) to improve to 4-2 this fall. Josh Howard-Tripp defeated Jarod Hing of Tulsa 6-4, 7-6 (1) to move to 6-4 this season. Josh Bortnick knocked off Alex Kartsonis (UMKC) 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (4) to even his record this season at 2-2. Alex Reco closed singles action for Arkansas, defeating Kenji Yanaba (Nebraska) with a 6-0, 6-1 win, moving to 3-3 this fall.
Junior Branch Terrell defeated Davide Callegari (North Dakota) 6-4, 6-3, improving too 2-2 this fall.
In doubles, both Arkansas tandems lost, as Jose Alonzo and Alex Reco fell to Wichita State’s Eddie Stoica and Marius Frosa 8-1, while Branch Terrell and Josh Bortnick dropped their match against Dylan Bednarczyk and Isaac Nortey of Nebraska 8-2.
Oscar Mesquida earned a bye and will start competition Friday, along with the No. 2 seed and 27th-ranked Jose Salazar.
