Garza Shines As Hogs Finish 6th
INDEPENDENCE, Minn. – The No. 20 Arkansas men’s golf team dropped four spots on the final day of the Gopher Invitational with rounds of 289-284-303 – 876 (+24) to finish alone in sixth place at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
While the team was competing for a title, freshman Luis Garza was going for a title of his own at the Gopher Individual Tournament at nearby Pioneer Creek Golf Club. The rookie started the day in seventh place, but quickly climbed the leaderboard when he eagled the first hole and then came back with birdies on No. 2 and No. 4 to get to 4-under on the day.
Garza ended up recording a 2-under 70 in the final round and finished at 74-69-70 – 213 (-3) to post a runner-up finish in the field of 40 players. Four of his six collegiate rounds are under-par through the first two weekends of the year.
The Razorbacks struggled as a team with a 19-over 303 in the final round. Dylan Naidoo posted another top 15 finish with a Sunday 5-over 76 to finish T-11th overall at 70-70-76 – 216 (+3). Alvaro Ortiz recorded his first round over par this fall and finished T-19th with rounds of 70-70-78 – 218 (+5).
Mason Overstreet signed for Arkansas’ best round of the day with a 3-over 74 and finished T-33rd overall at 73-74-74 – 221 (+8). William Buhl (T-39th) and Charles Kim (T-44th) rounded out the team as the Razorbacks played at the Gopher Invitational for the first time in four years.
Arkansas returns to action in three weeks, traveling to Vestavia Hills, Alabama, Oct. 3-4 for the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at Old Overton Club. The Razorbacks finished fifth in the field of 12 teams at the event last fall.
