Gochenour in Sixth After Day One of Heptathlon

EUGENE, Ore. – After day one of the heptathlon at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships, junior Alex Gochenour sits in sixth place with freshman teammate Taliyah Brooks just outside of scoring position in ninth. Day two of the seven-event competition begins Thursday at 2 p.m. (CT). In the new competition format, the Razorback women will open in semifinal heats and field finals Thursday.

Sitting in eighth place through the first two events of the day, Gochenour moved up two spots in the overall standings with a third-attempt mark of 12.62m/41-5 in the shot put. She closed the day with a wind-aided time of 24.64 at 200 meters to post a score of 3,516 points through the first four events of the heptathlon. Gochenour is seeking her first scoring effort in the heptathlon after an 11th-place finish at last year’s NCAA meet.

Brooks opened her NCAA outdoor debut with a time of 13.39 in the 100-meter hurdles which put her in fifth place after the first event. She capped her day with a top-10 showing at 200 meters, crossing the finish line in a wind-aided time of 24.35 to move up to ninth in the overall standings. Brooks posted a day-one score of 3,459 points. Along with their heptathlon duties, she and Gochenour are also qualified for the 100-meter hurdles semifinals.

Thursday’s competition will feature scoring opportunities at 10,000 meters, in the pole vault and javelin and with the end of the heptathlon. The Razorbacks will also be after qualifying efforts with semifinal heats at 400 meters, 800 meters, and in the 100-meter hurdles, 3,000-meter steeplechase and 4×400-meter relay.
