Gomez Alonso Named SEC Freshman of the Year

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.  – Freshman Carolina Gomez Alonso was named the SEC Freshman of the Year, as announced by the league office on Thursday. Gomez Alonso also earned Second Team All-SEC honors and was tabbed for the All-Freshman Team.

With the achievement, Gomez Alonso becomes only the second freshman in program history and the second in three years to be selected as the SEC Freshman of the Year. The SEC first recognized the top freshman in the conference in 2000, before adding an All-Freshman team in 2008.

In her rookie year, Carolina ended the fall season on a high note as she won the ITA Central Regional Championship and advanced to the Round of 16 at the ITA National Fall Championships. In the dual season, Gomez Alonso ended the regular season on a three-match win streak and is ranked No. 41 in the latest ITA rankings.

Gomez Alonso posted a 12-5 dual singles record (19-6 overall), primarily competing at the No. 2 position for the Razorbacks where she went 8-5. Against ranked opponents, Gomez Alonso went 3-5, including a ranked win over Auburn’s No. 46 Arsenault to help secure the upset over then-No.12 Auburn.

Her performances throughout the spring earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors twice, after clinching wins over Baylor and Alabama. In doubles, Gomez Alonso went 11-6 with partner Kelly Keller helping to secure the doubles point for the Hogs in its last four matches to end the season on a four-match win streak.
