Hogs Head to Knoxville for Sunday Doubleheader Against No. 5 Tennessee, Tennessee Tech
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 47 Arkansas men’s tennis team (11-3) travels to The Volunteer State for a doubleheader against No. 5 Tennessee (12-3) at noon CT for its SEC opener and Tennessee Tech (0-5) at 4:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, March 3.
The Razorbacks are back in action after a 4-2 victory over SMU on Wednesday afternoon. The Hogs were able to bounce back after dropping the doubles point by winning four singles matches to secure the victory over the Mustangs. Stefanos Savva and Karlo Kajin recorded the first two points for Arkansas, while Melvin Manuel and Božo Barun followed with straight-set wins to clinch the match for the Razorbacks. Manuel and Savva currently lead the Hogs with eight singles victories each.
No. 5 Tennessee is off to a 12-3 start this spring and most recently won its SEC opener against No. 43 Georgia on Friday, 6-1. The Volunteers are led by senior No. 7 Johannus Monday and junior No. 27 Shunsuke Mitsui, who are a combined 22-4 in dual matches this season. The singles lineup also features freshman No. 82 Filip Pieczonka, who holds a 7-2 record this year. Tennessee has two ranked doubles pairs in No. 8 Monday/Angel Diaz and No. 36 Mitsui/Pieczonka. Monday/Diaz head the lineup with a 6-1 record at the No. 1 position, while Mitsui/Pieczonka have posted a 9-1 start to the spring.
The Golden Eagles have started the season 0-5 and are coming off a 5-2 loss to Presbyterian last Sunday. Freshmen Alex Alvarez and Murilo Burckhardt head the Tennessee Tech singles lineup, playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. The tandem of freshmen Lucas Bitzer and Davids Spaks lead the Golden Eagles with two doubles wins this year.
