Hogs Suffer First Consecutive Losses, Fall at Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. –  The Arkansas women’s basketball team suffered its first consecutive losses of the season after falling at Tennessee, 81-55, in a game where the Lady Vols led wire-to-wire. Arkansas started the game down 12-0 and could never string a big run to overcome an early hole. Arkansas got in early foul trouble, as Saylor Poffenbarger and Maryam Dauda each had three in the second quarter with an already short bench. Taliah Scott led the Hogs in scoring for the 15th time this season with 23 points.

Tennessee got off to an early 12-0 lead, while the Hogs came up empty on their first six possessions. The Hogs then got on the board after three minutes thanks to a Scott 3-pointer. Dauda then knocked down a triple, as Arkansas trailed 18-8 with less than four minutes left in the first quarter. The Lady Vols then scored four straight points until Samara Spencer took it to the rack for a layup. Tennessee knocked down a 3-pointer, but Jenna Lawrence responded with one of her own. At the end of the first quarter, Arkansas trailed 27-13.

After a few empty possessions on both ends to open the second quarter, Scott found an open Dauda, who knocked down her second 3-pointer of the game. The Hogs were in a scoring drought for just over two minutes until Spencer found Dauda, who made a nice cut to the basket. Arkansas then cut the deficit below double digits, as Scott made a 3-pointer, while Tennessee was in a scoring drought for over two minutes. The Lady Vols dug out of that drought with a layup, and at the media timeout taken at the 3:52 mark, Arkansas was behind, 31-21. Out of the break, Tennessee, converted a 3-point play, which was a part of a 7-0 run until Scott drained a triple. Tennessee closed out the quarter on a 4-0 run, as Arkansas trailed 40-24 at the half.

Tennessee opened the second half with a 3-pointer, but Dauda came up with a fast break layup off an assist from Spencer. The Lady Vols then answered with four straight points until Makayla Daniels got her first basket of the game off a triple. Tennessee extended its lead by 24, as the media timeout was called at the 4:46 mark. Scott earned her way to double digits in scoring with a layup and Daniels followed with a layup of her own until Tennessee knocked down a 3-pointer. Poffenbarger delivered a layup, but Tennessee closed out the third quarter on a 5-0 run to go up by 26. Arkansas went into the fourth quarter down, 63-37.

Scott nailed a jumper, but Tennessee answered with two free throws. The freshman nailed down another, but the Lady Vols had another answer with a layup. Daniels came up with a 3-pointer, and at the media timeout taken at the 4:18 mark, Arkansas was down, 70-47. The Lady Vols outscored the Hogs 11-8 in the final 3.5 minutes of the game, as the Hogs fell, 81-55.

HOG HIGHLIGHTS

• Scott registered 23 points for her 19th double-digit scoring game in 20 appearances and 13th 20-point game of her freshman season. She added two boards and two steals
• Dauda logged her 12th double-digit game of the season off 10 points and five boards
• Spencer was just shy of double digits with nine points, while adding three rebounds, four assists and two steals
• Daniels recorded eight points, a team-high seven rebounds, which tied Poffenbarger for a team’s most, one block and two steals
• Emrie Ellis delivered three blocks to tie a season-high, while playing 10 minutes off the bench

UP NEXT

Arkansas will be off on Thursday and then is set to host Missouri on Sunday, Feb. 18 at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast on SEC Network.
