Hogs Swept by Commodores in First-Ever Meeting Sunday

Arkansas and Vanderbilt’s volleyball programs faced off for the first time ever on Sunday and with both teams looking for a win on the weekend, the Commodores ultimately came out on top and swept the Razorbacks (17-25, 18-25, 18-25).

The match was Vanderbilt’s first in the SEC, and puts them at 1-3 in conference play, also Arkansas’ record after the Hogs were swept at Mizzou on Friday. The Razorbacks are now 5-10 on the season.

Outside hitter Lakin Laurendine was the only player from either team to reach double digit kills on the day with 11, and hit .205.

Sophomore setter Kiki Remensperger continued to provide a steady presence for Arkansas with another double-double. She notched 17 assists and a team-high 11 digs on the match.

Set 1

Arkansas’ inability to score in bunches haunted the Hogs early as the Commodores commanded the pace of the opening set and went up 15-9 at the media break. The Razorbacks got the next two points from there to come within four, but the Dores answered with four streak to extend their lead. Arkansas couldn’t get its offense going in time to mount a comeback and a kill from Vanderbilt secured the victory for them, 25-17.

Set 2

The middle frame was closer to start with five ties, and a three-point run featuring an ace from Parker Duncan and kill from Laurendine gave Arkansas a narrow 9-8 lead. The teams continued to trade blows, but three unanswered Vanderbilt points out of the media timeout gave the home team an 18-13 advantage and sent the Hogs to a timeout. Arkansas came within three again at 21-18, but the Commodores locked in and got four straight en route to a 25-18 set two win.

Set 3

A Laurendine kill and block from Journey Peppers from Romani Thurman put the Razorbacks ahead 4-1 in the third set, but the lead didn’t last long. Vanderbilt began to pull away with an ace for a 7-5 advantage, and Arkansas was playing catch-up from there. The momentum did wing the Razorbacks’ way for a bit in the middle with a big 6-0 run, capped off with a block from Thurman and Zoi Evans, but Vanderbilt bit back with four straight to tie it at 14-all. The Razorbacks regained the lead briefly after a timeout, but the Dores held the Hogs to just four more points as they took the third set 25-18 and notched the match sweep.
