Hogs Swept by Longhorns on Friday

Despite a solid push in the third set to keep the match alive, the Razorbacks ran out of steam in Austin on Friday night as they were swept by the Texas Longhorns (17-25, 14-25, 25-27).

Texas, one of only two undefeated teams left in the country, moves to 15-0 on the season and maintains an unblemished SEC record at 7-0. Arkansas falls to 5-13, 1-6 in conference play.

The Hogs ran a 6-2 offense in Austin on Friday, utilizing both their sophomore setters Kiki Remensperger and Livia Niu. Niu notched a career high 13 assists, and Remensperger was just behind with 12.

Lakin Laurendine led the Hogs in kills and digs on the night, with seven each. Romani Thurman had the next-highest tally with six kills.

Both of Arkansas’ middles, Zoi Evans and Journey Peppers, had five kills on the evening and hit .500. Peppers contributed four kills defensively and Evans had three.

Set 1

A 3-0 run by Arkansas that featured an ace from Avery Calame gave the Hogs an early lead at 7-6. Texas was never far behind, but Arkansas grew its advantage to three points at 11-8 off a kill from Laurendine. The Longhorns shook it off and locked in for a 7-0 run that quickly swung the momentum and put them up 19-14. The Razorbacks kept chasing and cut the deficit to three, but Texas closed it out with five straight points and took the opening frame 25-17.

Set 2

The two teams traded points early, but four unanswered from the home team gave them an 8-4 lead that the Longhorns never surrendered. Arkansas couldn’t score more than one point at a time, while Texas cruised to a 21-13 lead, at which point the Hogs huddled. They only got one more point after that, and the Longhorns easily took set two 25-14.

Set 3

The Hogs had new life in set three and used a 3-0 to go up 6-4 early. Arkansas limited Texas’ chances and the Longhorns’ errors began to stack up as the Razorbacks led 15-12 at the media break. Texas kept the pressure on and cut Arkansas’ advantage to one, but a kill from Evans kept the cushion intact for the Hogs at 19-17. Down 20-18, Texas called time, and the Horns got three of the next five and forced an Arkansas timeout. The Razorbacks got a block next to stay up by two, but a 3-0 spurt by Texas gave the Longhorns the lead at 24-23. Arkansas tied it twice more to push it to extra points, but the Longhorns finished it out 27-25 for the match sweep.
