Hogs Take Down In-State Foe Red Wolves, 4-1

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Razorbacks (2-1-0) opened up the home slate with a 4-1 victory over Arkansas State (1-2-1) on Sunday.

How it Happened

For the second season in a row, Arkansas’ first goal at home was scored in an unconventional fashion, and it was scored by forward Anna Podojil. 23 minutes into the match, forward Sophia Aragon was fouled in the penalty box after her shot was blocked by Arkansas State goalie Damaris Deschaine. Podojil fired the penalty kick across the ground and into the right side of the goal.

Razorback Field’s first goal last season, taken by Podojil, was an indirect free kick in the 6-yard box against No. 25 BYU on Aug. 30.

With the score, the 38th of her career, she is now tied with Ruthie Miller for the third most goals in program history.

The Hogs struck again with one minute to spare before halftime. A pass from midfielder Keller Matise on the near side ended up ricocheting off two Red Wolves defenders right where defender Shana Flynn was waiting. Flynn loaded up and fired a right-footed shot that met with the far post and into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Arkansas finished the half outshooting Arkansas State, 14-3.

The Razorbacks went up by three goals after forward Ava Tankersley headed a corner kick in from A. Podojil. The goal was Tankersley’s first of the season.

For the second straight match, the Hogs scored off an own goal. A. Podojill brought the ball down the field and attempted to connect with freshman Taylor Berman at the penalty spot however, the pass found the shin of an Arkansas State defender and past the new Red Wolves keeper Olivia Luther.

The visiting team avoided the shutout with one minute remaining after forward Sydoney Clarke got them on the board by beating new Razorback goalie Sierra Cota-Yarde.

Arkansas finished the match outshooting the Red Wolves, 29-6. A. Podojil led the Razorbacks with four shots and put two on frame.
