Hogs Taken Down by Tigers on Sunday

The Razorbacks continued their SEC opening weekend on Sunday with a match against the LSU Tigers and while Arkansas came out hot in the opening set, LSU got the next three straight to hand the Hogs their first conference loss of the season (25-12, 17-25, 21-25, 23-25).

Freshman outside hitter Parker Duncan had her second 20+ kill outing in as many nights with 20 and a .283 hitting percentage. Fellow outside Lakin Laurendine had 19 kills and hit .255.

Sophomore setter Kiki Remensperger tallied 43 assists and 10 digs on the day for her ninth double-double of the season. She was one of three Hogs to have double-digit digs on the day: libero Kylie Weeks led the team with 12 and defensive specialist Gaby Cornier had 10.

Blocking ended up being the downfall for the Razorbacks on Sunday: LSU out-blocked Arkansas 17 to just one on the day.

A bright side on the day was that 3,081 fans were at Barnhill for the action, the highest-attended match for Arkansas since the 2023 season and sixth-highest ever.

Set 1

Everything was clicking for the Hogs early on and they limited LSU to one point at a time while they strung together a 6-0 run that quickly put them up 12-3. The Tigers just couldn’t find an offensive rhythm and the Razorbacks had another big 3-0 run that doubled up the lead at 20-10 and sent the Tigers to a timeout. They added two out of the break, but Arkansas finished the set on five-point streak and an LSU error gave the set to the home team, 25-12. The Hogs hit .400 in the opening frame while the Tigers were held to -.067.

Set 2

The momentum started in LSU’s favor in the second set, and while the Hogs didn’t let them get too far ahead, the Tigers held a 15-12 lead at the media timeout. From there, LSU went on a 7-3 run that made it 22-15 for them, and Arkansas called time. The Hogs managed to get one back, but the Tigers locked in and carried the energy through to the end of the set 25-17, knotting the match at 1-1.

Set 3

The Tigers came out in the third and claimed the lead quickly, but the Razorbacks fired back with three straight points to bring Arkansas within two at 9-7. LSU immediately adjusted and its offense kept rolling, which made it 18-11 Tigers in a hurry and the Hogs went to a timeout. Arkansas found its way shortly after that and rattled off a 3-0 run, punctuated by an ace from Romani Thurman, and cut the deficit to 22-20. LSU got two points out of a timeout to take it to set point, and while the Hogs spoiled it once, a Tiger kill ended it 25-21 and LSU went up 2-1 in the match.

Set 4

The fourth set was very close between the two teams, with nine ties through each side’s first 10 points. They traded blows and didn’t allow the other to get more than a couple at a time, but the Hogs held a narrow 15-14 lead at the media timeout of a kill from Duncan. The Tigers regained the lead for a bit, but after a 4-1 run with two LSU timeouts in between, Arkansas led 21-19. The Tigers then got five unanswered, which put match point in their hands. Back-to-back kills from Duncan gave the Hogs one last chance, but a kill from LSU gave them the set 25-23 and the match 3-1.
