
Jack Turner 4th, Yariel Soto Torrado 8th in NCAA decathlon
EUGENE – Completing the decathlon during the second day of the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field produced six points for the Razorbacks as Jack Turner and Yariel Soto Torrado finished in fourth and eighth place.
Turner scored 7,963 points and moved to No. 3 on the UA all-time list. Soto Torrado accumulated 7,804 points.
Leo Neugebauer of Texas defended his title with a collegiate record of 8,961 points and set the world-leading score for the 2024 season as he surpassed his German national record. Neugebauer’s previous collegiate record was 8,836 points from last year’s NCAA title.
Second and third place finishers also surpassed 8,000 points with Mississippi State’s Peyton Bair runner-up at 8,131 and Miami’s Edgar Campre the bronze medalist with 8,042.
Soto Torrado and Turner finished off the two day event by placing first and third in the 1,500m with career best times of 4:23.87 and 4:26.79 for 785 and 766 points, respectively.
Prior to the final event, Turner and Soto Torrado were in fifth and 10th place following the javelin. Turner was 12th in the event at 172-11 (52.71) for 629 points while Soto Torrado placed 22nd with a 143-5 (43.71) for 496 points.
The second day of the decathlon started off with career best times for both in the 110m hurdles as both won the sections they race in. Turner posted a 14.27 for 940 points to finish ahead of Neugebauer’s 14.36. A 15.11 for Soto Torrado edged out Oregon’s Rafael Rapp (15.16) in scoring 836 points.
In the discus, Turner and Soto Torrado placed 12th and 14th with marks of 135-3 (41.23) and 134-4 (40.94) as they picked up 690 and 684 points, respectively.
Soto Torrado totaled 913 points in the pole vault with a 16-5.25 (5.010 clearance as he finished second to a 17-1 (5.21) vault for Neugebauer. Turner was 10th overall with a 15-5.5 (4.71) make for 822 points.
