John Daly II Makes Cut at PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Razorback senior John Daly II fired a bogey-free 67 (-5) on Friday and, not only made the cut as the low amateur, but is tied for seventh with a 67-under 137 (70-67) at the PGA TOUR’s Puerto Rico Open, played at the par-72 Grand Reserve Golf Club,

Daly is playing in the PGA TOUR stop thanks to a sponsor’s exemption. Daly will start round 3 at 11 am (CT) with Beau Hossler. The Puerto Rico Open will be shown on GOLF Channel on Saturday and Sunday from 1:30 to 4:30 pm (CT).

“It’s awesome,” Daly said. “This place has always been one of my favorites. To come watch my dad play back in the day, so it’s pretty cool to make it to the weekend.”

When asked about making the cut, Daly said, “Honestly, go out there and try to go as low as I can. I got nothing to lose, so just go out there and have fun and just keep doing what I’m doing.”

Chandler Blanchet leads at -13 with Gordon Sargent at -9. There is four-way tie for third at -8, including Ricky Castillo, Jesper Svensson, Blades Brown and Jeremy Paul. Daly is 1 of 5 tied for seventh.

Daly’s debut on the PGA TOUR was as good as it could get, starting with a birdie on hole 1. He strung together eight pars afterwards to make the turn at 1-under. He dropped a shot on 10 before responding with a pair of birdies. After a bogey on 15, Daly bounded with a birdie to post a 2-under 70 in the first round.

On Tuesday, Daly matched his best round of the year with his bogey-free, 5-under-par 67. He started round two on hole 10 and opened with four pars. On the par-5, 14th, Daly reach the green in three shots and drained the putt for birdie. After three more pars, Daly closed his first nine holes with a birdie on the par-4, 18th. From the intermediate rough on his second shot, Daly found the green and sank the birdie putt. On both par 3s (15 and 17), Daly found the bunker but saved par on both to make the turn at -2.

On his back nine (holes 1-9), He got to 3-under with a birdie on the par-4, 3rd. On the par-4, 5th, Daly saved par from the bunker. On 6 (his 15th hole), Daly found the rough but was able to get a drop off a sprinkler head. He recovered to the fairway, hit the green and sank the birdie putt. He finished his round with a birdie on 8 and apar on 9 for his 67.
