Jordan West breaks UA shot put record on three-event day
FAYETTEVILLE – A shot put school record in Jordan West’s third throwing event of the day produced one of many highlights in Friday’s Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix at John McDonnell Field.
A world-leading time of 12.96 (1.3 wind) in the 110m hurdles had Cordell Tinch of Division II Pittsburgh State producing an all-dates collegiate best that was previously held by Razorback Omar McLeod with a 12.97 in 2015.
Tinch also bettered the McDonnell facility record of 13.07 set by both Grant Holloway (Florida) and Daniel Roberts (Kentucky). Finishing second and third in the race were Tade Ojora (13.26) and Louis Rollins (13.56).
Razorback Chris Bailey blistered a 44.84 to win the 400m, moving to No. 3 on the UA all-time list with his career best.
West heaved the shot put to a distance of 68-1.5 (20.76) in the fifth round and moved into the lead. Jamaica’s Rajendra Campbell answered in the sixth round with a 69-4.25 (21.14) winning toss.
For West the shot put record came after doing six rounds each of the hammer and discus earlier in the day. Improving his career best in the hammer three times, West is N. 4 on the Arkansas all-time list with a mark of 170-6 (51.98). Then he claimed the discus with a throw of 180-6 (55.03).
Bailey finished ahead of a pair of Baylor sprinters who ran in separate heats. Runner-up to Bailey in the second section was Dillon Bedell with a 45.63 while Demar Francis claimed the first section in 45.86 to place third overall.
Joining Bailey in the 400m were teammates Brandon Battle (46.54) and James Benson II (47.05). Arkansas alum Hunter Woodhall posted a time of 48.46.
In the prelims of the 100m, Connor Washington equaled his career best of 10.20 with a 2.0 wind that moves him to equal No. 8 on the UA all-time list. In the final a windy 10.18 (2.1 wind) placed Washington fourth.
Another wind reading of 2.1 occurred in the 200m as Washington clocked 20.44 for third place behind a 20.27w for Michael Joseph of Kansas and a 20.40w for Arkansas alum Marqueze Washington.
Kason O’Riley won the high jump with a clearance of 7-1 (2.16), having one less miss at that height than runner-up Justin Lewis. Tomas Ferrari finished fourth at 6-9 (2.06). In the long jump Ryan Brown had a season best of 25-4 (7.72) to place third with Issac Grimes claiming the victory with a leap of 26-0.75 (7.86).
