Maloney races in 800m prelims, Perinchief contests triple jump

EUGENE – Arkansas alum Shafiqua Maloney raced in the opening round of the 800m at the World Athletics Championships on Thursday at Hayward Field while Jah-Nhai Perinchief, who trains in Fayetteville, competed in the qualifying round of the triple jump.

Maloney, the national record hold for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, finished sixth in her heat of the 800m with a time of 2:03.00. Through the first lap Maloney was in fifth place with a split of 59.40.

The top three finishers in Maloney’s heat were Renelle Lamote of France (2:00.71), Ethiopia’s Freweyni Hailu (2:00.93), and American Ajee Wilson (2:01.02).

Perinchief, representing Bermuda, placed 12th in his group of the triple jump and finished 22nd overall with a mark of 53-9 (16.38) from his first attempt. The 12th place mark overall, and the cutoff to make the final, was 54-8.75 (16.68) by India’s Eldhose Paul.

This weekend will feature more Razorbacks contesting numerous events to close out the World Championships.

Friday will feature the final of the 400m hurdles with Razorback Britton Wilson and Arkansas volunteer assistant Shamier Little racing at 7:50 p.m. (PT).

Arkansas alum Andrew Irwin will be involved in the qualifying round of the pole vault, where a field of 32 will be trimmed down to 12 vaulters for the final. Irwin is in group B with the pole vault starting at 5:05 p.m. (PT).

On Saturday and Sunday, NCAA champion Ayden Owens-Delerme will contest the decathlon. He gets started at 9:50 a.m. (PT) on Saturday with the 100m.

Also racing on Saturday in the 100m hurdles are Razorback Yoveinny Mota and Cindy Sember, who trains in Fayetteville. Mota is the national record holder for Venezuela with a 12.87 from this season while Sember represents Great Britain and has a career best of 12.53 from 2021.
