Mesquida And Alonzo Advance At Regional Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Junior Oscar Mesquida and freshman Jose Alonzo advanced to Saturday’s round of 16 at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
After receiving a bye on Thursday, Mesquida began action against Minnesota’s Jesse Sprinkel, defeating the Golden Gopher 7-5, 7-5. Mesquida followed that performance with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Eddie Stoica of Wichita State to improve to 5-3 this fall and advance to Saturday.
Alonzo defeated 66th-ranked Josh Silverstein of Iowa 6-2, 6-3 in his first match Friday, then knocked off Nebraska’s Micah Kousia 6-3, 7-6 (4) to advance to the round of 16 and improve to 6-2 this fall.
Freshman Josh Howard-Tripp split his two matches Friday, defeating Jason Krest (Iowa) 6-0, 6-2, before falling to Toby Boyer (Nebraska) 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-1, moving to 7-5 this season. No. 27 Jose Salazar also split the day, winning his first match 7-5, 7-5 over Oklahoma’s Mason Bridgan, before dropping to Stefan Milicevic of Minnesota in a hard fought battle 6-7 (2), 6-4, 7-6 (4).
Branch Terrell, Josh Bortnick and Alex Reco each fell in their lone match of the day. Terrell lost to No. 83 Felix Corwin 7-5, 6-4, while Ferran Calvo (Oklahoma) knocked off Bortnick 6-1, 6-2. Reco fell to Minnesota’s Jackson Allen 6-3, 6-4. Reco drops to 3-4 this fall, while Bortnick and Terrell are each 2-3.
In doubles action, both Razorback tandems advanced to the round of 32, as Oscar Mesquida and Josh Howard-Tripp defeated Nathan Reekie and Alex Woodward (Omaha) 8-2 and No. 27 Jose Salazar and Alex Sanjurjo defeated Joshua Goodger and Boriss Kamdem (Tulsa) 8-3.
