No. 7 Arkansas Scores Four Unanswered Goals to Defeat No. 13 Mississippi State, 4-2
FAYETTEVILLE – No. 7 Arkansas soccer (7-2-2, 5-0-1 SEC) conceded two goals in the first six minutes of the match against No. 13 Mississippi State (9-2-1, 4-1-1 SEC) but scored four straight to pick up a 4-2 win and take sole possession of first place in the SEC standings.
How it Happened
The Bulldogs, unbeaten in SEC play before tonight’s match, netted a pair of goals from distance to open the scoring at Razorback Field. Zoe Main had the first in the third minute, followed by a strike from Tatum Borman that snuck under the crossbar in the sixth minute.
Arkansas cut into Mississippi State’s lead when forward Taylor Berman drew a foul inside the penalty box in the 34th minute. After a video review, the penalty was confirmed and senior midfielder Zoe Susi lined up to take the kick. Susi fired right past a left-diving Sarah Wommack, the State goalkeeper.
For the first time since the 2:51 mark, the match was tied in the 47th minute after sophomore Kyndal Ewertz redirected a well-placed ball from freshman Molly Teed past Wommack.
The Razorbacks grabbed the lead in the 56th minute after Berman headed in a free kick from freshman Presley Marvil. Insurance was added in the final 10 minutes, Ewertz’s second goal, after she took a pass from Susi at midfield all the way to the top of the 18-yard box.
Despite allowing two goals early, Arkansas goalkeeper Evie Vitali made six saves in the second half to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
Mississippi State outshot Arkansas 22-14.
