Outdoor season begins with distance races at Stanford
STANFORD, California – Razorback men open the outdoor season on Friday with distance runners competing in the Stanford Invitational.

The evening races for Arkansas start with Jack Williams in the 3,000m steeplechase at 6:03 p.m. (PT). Then a crew of five Razorbacks are competing in two sections of the 5,000m at 8:16 p.m. and 9:11 p.m. while four others are in two sections of the 10,000m at 10:08 and 11:22 p.m.
Williams made his debut in the steeplechase at last year’s Stanford Invitational, posting a time of 9:21.48 to place 16th. He improved to 9:05.17 to finish sixth at the SEC Championships.
In the primary 5,000m section, Schreml and Shearer race among a field that is scheduled to a mixture of collegians and professional runners. Schreml placed third a year ago in setting a career best of 13:43.82 at the Stanford meet. Shearer clocked 14:07.30 as the SEC bronze medalist in Baton Rouge last season and produced a career best 13:36.86 indoors this season.
Racing in the third section of the 5,000m are Reuben Reina, Tommy Romanow, and Josh Shearer. Reina debuted with a 14:24.82 in the 5k at the Drake Relays in 2023 and improved to 13:57.61 this indoor season in Boston. Shearer set a career best of 13:59.01 last season at the Bryan Clay Invitational a couple of weeks after opening with a 14:13.32 at the Stanford Invitational. Romanow makes his debut at the 5,000m distance.
The primary 10,000m race will include Patrick Kiprop, Jacob McLeod, and Yego Kirami. Kiprop set a career best of 28:00.58, which ranks No. 2 on the UA all-time list, in placing sixth at Stanford a year ago. Yego established a career best of 28:22.94 in winning the Raleigh Relays a year ago. McLeod set a career best 28:28.73 in last year’s Stanford meet and is No. 9 on the UA all-time list.
Myles Richter will race in the second section of the 10,000m. Richter, who has a career best of 29:04.84 from 2021, has finished third (2022) and fourth (2023) at the SEC Championships.
