
Patrick Kiprop delivers SEC Indoor 5,000m victory on day 1
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Razorback Patrick Kiprop delivered the first victory for Arkansas as he claimed the 5,000m in 13 minutes, 37.52 seconds during the first day of the SEC Indoor Championships.
The Razorbacks also picked up eight points from a runner-up distance medley relay along with two points in the long jump from Uroy Ryan.
Through four of 17 finals scored, Texas A&M leads the men’s team score with 30.5 points, followed by Tennessee (21), Arkansas (20), Alabama (19), and Georgia (17.5).
Kiprop, fourth in the SEC Indoor 3,000m and 5,000m a year ago, finished ahead of Alabama’s duo of Dismus Lokira (13:40.40) and Victor Kiprop (13:41.44). Razorback Kiprop previously won the SEC Indoor 5,000m in 2022.
Arkansas also had Timothy Chesondin (13:54.95) and Brian Masai (14:00.24) in the race as they placed ninth and 13th.
The distance medley relay crew included Reuben Reina (2:53.21), Brandon Battle (45.45), Davis Helmerich (1:48.57), and Yaseen Abdalla (3:58.92). They produced a time of 9:25.85 while Texas A&M won the race in 9:23.92 with South Carolina third in 9:27.14.
The Aggies broke the SEC Indoor meet record of 9:29.35 set by Ole Miss in 2021.
Ryan reached a distance of 25-0 (7.62) in the long jump to place seventh while Henry Kiner finished 12th with a 24-2.25 (7.37).
Gabriel Emmanuel is the day 1 leader in the heptathlon with 3,287 points while teammates Jaxon Bair (3,188) and Connor Williams (3,093) are currently in third and sixth place. Those positions would account for 19 teams points.
Missouri’s Emanuele Bellanova is currently in second place with 3,214 points, trialing Emmanuel by 73 points.
Bair led the trio in the opening event of the heptathlon with a time of 7.00 in the 60m while Emmanuel finished in 7.01 as the Arkansas pair placed first and second. Bair also had the best long jump among the Hogs with a 23-9.5 (7.25) to place second in the event while Williams finished third with a 23-6.75 (7.18)
Following a 21-10.25 (6.66) long jump, Emmanuel made up ground by leading the shot put with a career best 51-0.25 (15.55) while Bair finished third with a 45-4.5 (13.83). Closing out day 1 with the high jump, Williams led the field with an indoor career best 6-9.75 (2.08) while Emmanuel placed second at 6-8.75 (2.05).
