Perico Begins Quest for NCAA Championship
FAYETTEVILLE – Arkansas freshman Julian Perico will begin his quest for the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship with a practice round on Thursday (May 23) and opening competition Friday (May 24) at Blessings Golf Club. Parking and admission are free for the practice round and throughout the Championship.
Perico will start his practice round at 9:00 am on hole 18. On Friday, he will start the first round on hole 1 at 9:02 am. His second round will start at 2:22 pm off hole 10 on Saturday. Tee times for the third round (Sunday) will be determined after the completion of 36 holes. After the third round, 15 teams and the top nine individuals not among those top 15 teams will advance to a fourth round (Monday) to determine the NCAA Individual Champion.
Perico is the fifth Razorback to participate at the NCAA Championship as an individual. In 1962, R.H. Sikes won the NCAA Championship and current Razorbacks Mason Overstreet was the 2017 NCAA Runner-up. Others to play as an individual include Bud Still (1995) and Craig Lile (2000). All told, Arkansas has had nine players finish among the individual top 10.
Perico, who was named to the SEC All-Freshman team, leads the Razorbacks with a 71.34 scoring average, which additionally stands as the best scoring average by a Razorback freshman. He earned a berth to the NCAA Championship by finishing sixth at the NCAA Austin Regional – grabbing the lone individual spot available from the site.
He won Alabama’s Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate last fall, shooting a school-record 197, and tallied a team-best five top 10’s. In addition, 34 of his 38 rounds this season counted toward the team total, he posted the low round a team-best 16 times and was the team’s highest finisher a team-best five times, including the SEC Championship and NCAA Regional.
