Planelles Ripoll Named SEC Player of the Week
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After a perfect 3-0 weekend on the road, No. 34 Arkansas’ Gerard Planelles Ripoll was recognized as the SEC Player of the Week, the first weekly honor of his career, as announced by the league Wednesday.
Planelles Ripoll is the first Razorback to be awarded SEC Player of the Week since 2016, when Mike Redlicki received the honor twice during the 2016 season. Planelles Ripoll was instrumental to Arkansas’ success this past weekend as the sophomore went 3-0 in singles play at the No. 2 position to help the Hogs earn three ranked wins on the road while extending their streak to four consecutive victories over ranked opponents.
Planelles Ripoll started the weekend with a straight-set victory in the win over No. 37 LSU to obtain his 10th singles victory this spring, joining four other Razorbacks to accomplish that feat this season. In Arkansas’ upset win at No. 8 Texas A&M, Planelles Ripoll secured the first ranked victory of his dual singles career, defeating No. 30 JC Roddick in three sets to initiate a massive 3-1 comeback for the Hogs to take down the Aggies. Planelles Ripoll won his fourth match in his last five appearances after taking down Trinity Grear (Rice) in straight sets to collect his 12th victory of the spring and clinch the perfect weekend for Arkansas.
Planelles Ripoll and the Razorbacks return to Billingsley Tennis Center this weekend to host No. 25 Florida on Friday, April 12, at 5:30 p.m. and No. 12 Mississippi State on Sunday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
