Razorback Brew 1/16: So Much Speed
Good morning. There’s starting your week well… and then there’s Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira winning the 2023 Latin America Amateur Championship with a 23-under par score and receiving invitations to play in The Masters Tournament, the Open Championship, the U.S. Open, the Amateur Championship and the U.S. Amateur Championship later this year. Congrats, Mateo!
Who You Got? In celebration of 100 seasons of Razorback basketball, Clay Henry broke down his picks for the All-Time Arkansas Starting 5.
Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?
- Face-to-Face with Saylor Poffenbarger
- Britton Wilson shakes off the rust
- And much, much more!
Living her best life. Saylor Poffenbarger is thriving with the Razorbacks. She’s already won SEC Freshman of the Week four times, and sits down with Bo Mattingly in this episode of the Hog Pod.
> WHAT RUST. In her first event of the year, Razorback track and field phenom Britton Wilson blew everyone away with a collegiate record in the 600m at the Arkansas Invitational. Wilson’s time of 1:25.16 broke the previous mark of 1:25.80 set by Texas A&M’s Athing Mu in 2021, and ranks No. 5 on the U.S. all-time list and No. 7 on the world all-time list.
So much speed was on display inside Randal Tyson Track Center on Friday. Arkansas’ James Benson II came in first in the men’s 300m with the third-fastest collegiate time of 32.46 with fellow Razorback Lance Lang finished right behind him at 32.93. Chris Bailey also came out on top in an event as he blazed a 1:15.18 in the men’s 600m, which is No. 6 on the collegiate all-time list.
> CHAMPIONSHIP MINDSET. Don’t let Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira see a record if you don’t want it broken. Mateo’s bogey-free score of 63 from Saturday at the 2023 Latin America Amateur Championship not only tied the record-low for the event, it helped him set the 54-hole record score of 198.
The Razorback golfer won the event Sunday at 23-under par and earned invitations to The Masters, US Open and The Open Championship later this year.
> LUCKY 13. Arkansas Swimming and Diving won 13 events as a team on Saturday afternoon on their way to a victory over Little Rock.
- Regan Caufield and Malea Martinez each had personal bests in a three-meter dive event with scores of 313.95 and 279.98, respectively.
- Gabby Bortnick posted a personal best of 198.75 in the one-meter dive event.
- Alessia Ferraguti won the 200 individual Medley with a time of 2:01.71, and helped secure the 200 Medlay relay.
The Razorbacks are back in the pool this weekend with a home match vs. Kansas.
> SPRING INTO SUCCESS. Arkansas men’s tennis head Coach Jay Udwadia earned his first win as the coach of the Razorbacks on Saturday as the Hogs went 2-0 to start the spring season.
Melvin Manuel had himself a clutch day. He earned victories in doubles and singles play to help Arkansas notch win No. 1 over San Diego State in the morning, and sealed the deal later on versus UC San Diego along with newcomers Gerard Planelles and Jakob Mosvold, who secured a 6-1 win as a doubles pair.
The Razorbacks will be back in action next Friday for their first home match, a doubleheader against Wichita State and Lamar.
> GOOD TIMES ROLLING. The No. 23 Arkansas women’s basketball team is back on the court tonight for a home game against Vanderbilt. The 16-3 Hogs last played over a week ago when they took down Missouri to secure their best 19-game start in 15 years.
SEC play has been very good for the Razorbacks. Their 3-1 start hasn’t been accomplished since the 2005-06 season, and all three victories have been by 20 points or more.
Tipoff is set for 6pm tonight at Bud Walton Arena, and the game will be broadcasted on SEC Network.
Differing paths. Razorback men’s basketball needs to get its mojo back, while the women’s team can keep things rolling tonight. Q and Z discuss the state of both teams in today’s episode.
