Razorback Brew 1/30: History On The Hill
Good morning. January has been filled with the best moments, stories, and reflections of Razorback basketball’s 100-year history. Relive it all in the three-part Hogs+ docuseries 100 Seasons of Arkansas Basketball, now available on-demand at HogsPlus.com.
In the present day, gymnastics and track and field are writing their own history with record-breaking weekends. We’ll get you caught up with everything from The Hill.
Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?
- Face-to-Face with Norah Flatley
- History inside Barnhill
- And much, much more!
Mix passion with longevity and you get a star. But we just call her Norah Flatley around these parts.
After spending four years competing for a powerhouse program at UCLA, Norah is back in the midwest to elevate a rising gymnastics program at Arkansas. Dive into her story in the latest episode of the Hog Pod with Bo Mattingly.
> HILL HISTORY. You all striped the Barn, and the Gymbacks made the most of it.
Arkansas gymnastics defeated LSU Friday night for the first time since 2012 in front the first-ever sellout crowd inside Barnhill Arena. The Gymbacks’ score of 197.475 is a new program record, and it’s the second time head coach Jordyn Wieber has overseen the previous record bested.
But the records don’t stop there. Norah Flatley and Leah Smith took event titles for Arkansas, on bars (9.925) and floor (9.950), respectively, with their best-career scores in the events. Freshman phenom Lauren Williams also set new career highs of 9.925 on both floor and vault, which placed her in second and third in the respective events.
This Friday’s dual match vs. Florida will be right down Razorback Rd. inside Bud Walton Arena.
> IMMEDIATE RECOVERY. Razorback women’s tennis responded in the best possible way to their 4-3 defeat to Florida State on Friday by sweeping Kansas State in their final match at the ITA Kickoff out in California. Singles victories from Indianna Spink, Morgan Cross, and Kelly Keller ensured victory for Arkansas. Spink and Cross also teamed up in doubles play earlier in the day and conceded just two sets.
Over in Michigan, the men’s team also closed the weekend out with a win. Singles victories from Alan Sau Franco, Melvin Manuel, and Foster Rogers locked in a 4-1 win over Cal Poly.
> UNTAPPED RANGE. Pick any spot on the floor. Odds are that Erynn Barnum scored from there.
The senior posted a career-high 37 points for Arkansas women’s basketball Sunday afternoon by shooting 62% from the field and draining three of five three-pointers. 37 points is the seventh most in a game in school history, and she added six rebounds and three assists as well in the Hogs’ overtime loss to Ole Miss.
> FULLY PREPPED. In their final tuneup before the SEC Championship, the Arkansas swim team put together a huge 181-62 win over Vanderbilt and won 12 events. Razorback swimmers Betsy Wizard, Bella Cothern, Vanessa Herrmann, Andrea Sansores, and Alessia Ferraguti all captured multiple wins.
The Razorbacks will head to College Station, Texas on Valentine’s Day for the SEC Championship.
> PASSING LANES. The Razorback Invitational featured two school records broken during Saturday’s action inside the Randal Tyson Track Center.
- Ackera Nugent broke the school record in the 60m hurdles with a 7.88 victory. The transfer from Baylor posted the previous world-leading time of 8.00 two weeks ago at the Arkansas Invite.
- Chris Bailey‘s winning time of 45.09 seconds in the 400m broke the Arkansas record originally set by Terry Gatson, who finished in 45.29 seconds back in 2005. Bailey also ran under the previous meet record of 45.34.
Check out all the results from the men’s and women’s squads from the weekend, including Kason O’Riley‘s high jump victory.
Highs and lows. Arkansas fell just short against Baylor over the weekend. Q and Z are here to dissect a tough, hard-fought loss, and give some shoutouts to the Gymbacks—and Hog fans—for setting a couple of records in today’s episode.
