Razorback Brew 1/5: Second Half Surge

Good morning. Razorback basketball is back in full swing, with the men’s team coming off a clutch ranked win, and the women’s team set to play tonight. Go inside the locker room following last night’s victory to hear from Coach Muss and plenty more.

Now, what’s all been mixed in today’s Brew?

  • A century of tradition
  • Hogs hire co-defensive coordinator
  • And much, much more!

Coming soon. In celebration of the 100th season of Arkansas Razorbacks men’s basketball, Hogs+ today announced a feature documentary that will tell the complete story of the program’s century-long tradition. Catch the first of three parts on January 12th, only on HogsPlus.com.

> POINTS IN THE CLUTCH. Arkansas men’s basketball outscored Missouri 47-34 in the second half last night to pick up an impressive 74-70 victory in their SEC home opener.

Ricky Council IV was the Hogs’ leading scorer as he netted 25 points, including 21 during the team’s second half surge. That’s right, over a third of the Razorbacks’ points came from the fantastic junior guard. Freshman guard Joseph Pinion also came in clutch with three three-pointers off the bench. Mizzou’s leading scorer on the year, D’Moi Hodge, was limited to just six points on four shots.

Now 12-2 on the season and in a four-way tie for the best overall record in the SEC, the No. 13 Razorbacks will be on the road this weekend with a primetime matchup against No. 22 Auburn. Catch tip-off at 7:30pm on SEC Network.

> PROTECT THIS HOUSE. It’s game day for Arkansas women’s basketball as the team plays host to Florida tonight at 7:30pm, and will be broadcasted on SEC Network Plus. The Razorbacks are 7-1 at home this season, and the Gators sport a 5-2 record for road/neutral games.

While the Hogs look for their best start against SEC competition in four years, fans in attendance will get a chance to see the Liberty Bowl Trophy, which will be located at the upper south entrance (from doors open to the end of halftime). The game will also be a White Out, so make sure to give the Razorbacks a home-court advantage.

> CLOSE TO PERFECT. Only three ball clubs are ahead of Arkansas in Perfect Game’s first top 25 of the year. The Diamond Hogs’ ranking of fourth is their highest in the publication’s preseason poll since 2013, when they began the year at No. 2.

The SEC reigns supreme in these rankings, with a conference-high of eight teams, including three in the top four and five in the top 10.

> HIT THE GYM. Single-meet and season tickets are still available for the 2023 Gymbacks season. The team will host five meets at home this year, three at Barnhill Arena and two at Bud Walton Arena, starting with Alabama at Barnhill on Jan. 13. Arkansas’ first meet is this Saturday at Nebraska.

> PARTNERS AGAIN. Arkansas football has hired Marcus Woodson to be co-Defensive Coordinator and work alongside Travis Williams once again. The two were on Auburn’s coaching staff from 2018-19.

A former safety at Ole Miss from 1999-2002, Woodson comes to Fayetteville with 18 years of coaching experience. His most recent position was the defensive backs coach for Florida State from 2020-22. The Seminoles led the ACC in yards allowed per game (165.4) this past season.

Learn all about Woodson’s coaching resume here.

Charged up. The Hog basketball team got a big top-25 win over Missouri last night, and Z is here to break it all down with Kamani Johnson in today’s episode.
