Razorback Brew 2/1: Top 2 (And We Ain't 2)

Good morning. Is Ricky Council still in the air? We’ve yet to see him land from that dunk last night. Check out the post-game locker room celebration following Arkansas men’s basketball’s 15th victory of the year.

Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?

  • The birthday twins
  • Hogs pounce on Aggies
  • And much, much more!

A night worth celebrating. The Hogs have now won three straight SEC games as they enter the back-half of their season. And there was much more to celebrate after the game.

Go inside the locker room for a glimpse of the post-game celebration. Hear from Head Coach Eric  Musselman as he dishes out the awards from the win, and sing along as the team sings happy birthday to the Mitchell twins!

> HIGH FLYING HOGS. An insane 180 reverse slam courtesy of Ricky Council was one of many highlights from Arkansas’ 81-70 victory over Texas A&M last night.

Ricky and Devo Davis led the way with 19 points each as the Razorbacks had one of their best shooting performances in their third-straight conference win inside Bud Walton Arena. Arkansas shot 50% from the field and had four players finish in double figures, while limiting the Aggies to 34%. The win also came on the 23rd birthdays of twins Makhel Mitchell and Makhi Mitchell. Makhel led the team with a whopping 13 rebounds and seven blocks, and Makhi scored the game’s first bucket.

Arkansas is back on the road this weekend with a Saturday afternoon tilt vs. South Carolina. Catch the 2:30pm tip on SEC Network.

> TOP 2 (AND WE AIN’T 2). There’s a new top women’s track program in the country, and it resides in Fayetteville.

The latest national rating index from USTFCCCA has the Arkansas women’s track and field ranked No. 1 in the nation, joining five other SEC schools in the top 10. Arkansas improved its world-leading time in the 4 x 400 relay last weekend at the Razorback Invitational, and the foursome of Amber AnningNickisha PryceParis Peoples, and Rosey Effiong claimed the women’s SEC Runner of the Week title together.

The Arkansas men’s team also leveraged their productive weekend at the Razorback Invite and are now No. 3 in the country, and the top SEC school. Chris Bailey remains the current world leader in the 600m in addition to having the world’s best time of 45.09 he posted in the 400m. Chris took home SEC Co-Runner of the Week honors for his performance as well.

Arkansas travels to Albuquerque this week for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Friday and Saturday, February 3-4.

> BRILLIANT BEGINNINGS. Arkansas gymnast Lauren Williams became the first Gymback to be named SEC Freshman of the Week since 2018 after an incredible performance against LSU. Williams posted career highs on both vault (9.925) and floor (9.925) in the Hogs’ victory last Friday evening, their first over LSU in 11 years. Williams’ 9.925 on floor also contributed to a 49.575 event score, the second-highest in program history, and she also helped propel Arkansas to a new program high score of 197.475 in front of the team’s first-ever sellout crowd of 7,147, a new Barnhill Arena record.

Williams and the No. 18 Gymbacks return to action on Friday as the team takes on No. 2 Florida from Bud Walton Arena at 6:45pm.

Three in a row. Z is here to break down the third-straight SEC win for men’s basketball, and we’re celebrating National Girls & Women In Sports Day with the help of Arkansas women’s golf coach Shauna Taylor, whose Choose Confidence Program is making a major impact in the community.
