Razorback Brew 2/17: 42 Outs From History
Good morning. Whether it’s taking the mound, diving in the pool, or balancing on the beam, the Razorbacks are set for an action-packed weekend. We’ll get you ready for it all.
Now, what all is steeping in today’s Brew?
- All access from the Tyson Invitational
- Opening day for the Diamond Hogs
- And much, much more!
Right off the blocks. When you’re at the top, everybody is chasing you. It’s a good thing the Hogs are too fast for the competition.
Go behind the scenes as the No. 1 Arkansas Men’s Track and Field team prepares for and competes at the annual Tyson Invitational hosted right here in Fayetteville. Follow Associate Head Coach Doug Case, Senior sprinter James Benson II, senior shot-putter Jordan West, and the rest of the Razorbacks as they fight to remain atop the national rankings.
> OPENING DAY. Arkansas baseball begins its 2023 season tonight in the College Baseball Showdown. A trio of Big 12 teams, Texas, No. 15 TCU, and No. 9 Oklahoma State represent the Razorbacks’ first three opponents of the year, with Texas up first.
It’s been a busy offseason for the Diamond Hogs, so let’s get you up to speed real quick.
- Arkansas is ranked No. 4 in Perfect Game’s preseason poll to begin the season, and are ranked inside the top 10 in five of the six major preseason polls. They’re No. 8 in the official NCAA rankings.
- Hagen Smith headlines a dangerous stable of pitchers at the Razorbacks’ disposal. Hagen, a Perfect Game preseason All-American, will make the start today vs. the Longhorns. Read more about the alien pitches pitching coach Matt Hobbs is set to unleash in this sit-down interview with Clay Henry.
- Second baseman Peyton Stovall returns at a new position this year and was selected as a preseason All-American by Baseball America. He was also named preseason All-SEC along with relief pitcher Brady Tygart.
First pitch tonight against Texas is at 7pm, and can be watched with a subscription to FloSports.
> DISTANCE DEBUT. Both Arkansas track and field teams will get to feature their distance medley relay units during this weekend’s Arkansas Qualifier going down inside Randal Tyson Track Center. But that’s only the tip of the iceberg. 400m star Britton Wilson will compete in the 800m for the first time along with Razorback freshman Ainsley Erzen, as well as pros Shamier Little and Shafiqua Maloney. SEC Network Plus will be streaming the action beginning at 2pm.
> FLOAT LIKE A BUTTERFLY. One year ago to the day, Andrea Sansores completed the 100-yard butterfly in 52.81 seconds at the 2022 SEC Championships. The Cancun, Mexico native got that time down to 51.77 yesterday for a new school record during day three of of the current SEC Championships. Andrea finished fourth in the event after she posted a 51.86 in the prelims, which was already a new Arkansas record and personal best for her.
> ROAD MATS. A top-15 matchup is in store for the Arkansas gymnastics team today as the Gymbacks face Kentucky in an SEC dual. The Razorbacks, ranked 14th in the country, are just behind the No. 11 Wildcats in the latest nationwide rankings following a third-place finished in last week’s Metroplex Challenge. The two programs are even closer when looking at the vault rankings. Arkansas is 13th in the event, while Kentucky is 12th. The dual will be broadcast live on SEC Network beginning at 7:30pm.
> 42 OUTS FROM HISTORY. The fourth-ranked Razorback softball team will play a loaded five-game slate for the second straight weekend, this time at the Clearwater Invitational. Four ranked teams and Nebraska are on the docket for the Hogs, starting with No. 7 Florida State today at high noon.
History is also on the line as head coach Courtney Deifel is just TWO wins away from becoming the program’s all-time wins leader. Deifel (sitting at 243 wins at Arkansas) is on the verge of surpassing Carrie Dever-Boaz’s program-record of 244 victories.
Chomping at the bit. The Arkansas baseball team gets its season started today down in Arlington, and we’re catching up with outfielder Jace Borhofen. And Z is here to preview men’s basketball’s matchup against Florida tomorrow.
