Razorback Brew 2/20: Standing Tall

Good morning. And a happy Presidents Day to you all, now go get that couch on sale. We all know it’s been the same Presidents Day deal for the last 20 years. Just take action and buy it. You know you want to.

The president of Arkansas softball might as well be Courtney Deifel, who has now won more games than any coach in program history. Check out this video featuring Sam Pittman, Dave Van Horn, Jordyn Wieber, and more congratulating her on the amazing achievement.

Congratulations Courtney, and may many more wins follow!

ALL ACCESS FROM ALL ANGLES: The Hogs started the weekend off with some big-time Ws. Get exclusive access from Arkansas men’s basketball and baseball taking care of business in convincing fashion.

Now, what all is steeping in today’s Brew?

  • One-on-One with Makayla Daniels
  • Coach Deifel stands above all
  • And much, much more!

Leading from a different perspective. Playing different sports and living all over the globe throughout her childhood made Makayla Daniels the unique player she is for Arkansas women’s basketball. And once high school began, her basketball journey took off to new heights.

In this episode of the Hog Pod, Daniels sits down with Hogs+ contributor Tera Talmadge to take us through her story of growing up in a military family, moving around the world, and finding a new home at Arkansas.

> 246 AND COUNTING. Arkansas softball head coach Courtney Deifel has officially set herself apart from all who came before her. After securing three wins over the weekend at the Clearwater Invite, Deifel is now the Razorback program record holder for most wins all-time.

The Hogs defeated Indiana and No. 22 Louisiana in a Saturday doubleheader to get their skipper to win No. 245, which surpassed former head coach Carrie Dever-Boaz’s 244 career wins, and Arkansas finished the tournament with a 6-1 victory over Nebraska to put her at 246 wins.

> YOUTHFUL SPARK. A career day from Jalen Graham was just what the doctor ordered for Razorback men’s basketball. Arkansas brought the Swamp to Florida in the form of an 84-65 victory thanks to a career-high 26 from Graham in 27 minutes off the bench. Graham was one of five Hogs to score at least 10 points, including freshman Nick Smith Jr. In his third game back, Smith played a season-high 32 minutes and had a +/- of +23, the second-highest on the team

> REWRITE THE HISTORY BOOKS. New school records were set by Arkansas track and field and gymnastics on Friday.

  • The foursome of Ben ShearerJames Benson II, Leroy Russell III, and Elias Schreml ran the fastest distance medley relay in Razorback men’s track and field history. Arkansas’ time of 9:22.13 was good enough for third place at the Arkansas Qualifier inside Tyson Track Center.
  • The Gymbacks recorded a new program high of 49.525 on vault, which included a perfect score. Sophomore Leah Smith nailed her Yurchenko full and stuck the landing for a 9.950 from both judges, the best possible mark for a vault of its kind, and she claimed a share of first place.

> STANDING TALL. Arkansas swimmers Bella CothernAlessia FerragutiAndrea Sansores, and Kobie Melton secured a third-place finish at the SEC Championships in the 400-freestyle relay with a time of 3:13.60. It was the Razorbacks’ first podium finish at SECs since 2021. Click here to see how the rest of the Razorbacks fared over the weekend in College Station.

> TEXAS HELD ‘EM. No. 8 Arkansas baseball put together a solid start to the 2023 season at the College Baseball Showdown. Here are some of the highlights from the Hogs’ two wins down in Arlington, TX.

  • Hagen Smith and Brady Tygart kept Texas at bay Friday night. Hagen struck out eight before Brady had three knockouts of his own in a five-out save that secured a 3-2 victory. Hear from Brady after his clutch outing and more in this exclusive look.
  • Arkansas’ bats came alive on Sunday as they dropped 18 runs on No. 9 Oklahoma State. The Hogs scored five runs in the second, third, and fifth innings before the game was called after seven innings.
  • Jared Wegner was responsible for much of the damage against the Cowboys, as the transfer from Creighton drove in five runs on a triple and a home run, his second dinger of the season. Relive Jared’s big day and more with an all-access pass, via HogsPlus.com.

The Razorbacks’ home-opener is on deck tomorrow vs. Grambling.
