Razorback Brew 2/27: Roaring 20's

Good morning. And congrats to Arkansas track and field for sustaining their dynasty at the SEC Indoor Championships. We’ll break down all the action from inside Randal Tyson Track Center and everything else from The Hill and bey0nd.

Now, what all is steeping in today’s Brew?

  • Face-to-Face with Chancellor Dr. Charles Robinson
  • Razorbacks get to 20 wins
  • And much, much more!

Pride and progress. As the first African American chancellor for the University of Arkansas, Dr. Charles Robinson understands how the Razorbacks impact so many. After all, he grew up admiring Nolan Richardson’s Arkansas teams. But the progress he strives to achieve isn’t linear, and the work to accomplish it is forever constant.

In this episode of the Hog Pod, Hogs+ senior contributor Clay Henry sits down with Dr. Robinson for a wide-ranging conversation about his career and the impact Razorback athletics have on the UA.

> RAN IT BACK. The SEC Indoor Championships belong to Arkansas once again as the men’s and women’s teams each collected first place over the weekend. It was the ninth consecutive title for the women’s team under Lance Harter’s tutelage, and the fourth consecutive title for the men’s team under the direction of Chris Bucknam.

These Razorbacks also exited the weekend with individual titles in their respective events:

  • Amanda Fassold (pole vault)
  • Ayden Owens-Delerme (heptathlon)
  • Jaydon Hibbert (triple jump)
  • Lauren Gregory (3,000m) and claimed the Cliff Harper trophy as the high-point scorer (21.5) for the second consecutive year.

This is the 33rd sweep for the Razorback men and women in SEC Championships – cross country (19), indoors (10), and outdoor (4).

> HOUSE RULES. After splitting with No. 19 Arizona on Thursday, Arkansas softball won four-straight to close out the weekend as the host of the Razorback Invitational.

The Hogs won an 11-inning thriller against Drake Friday afternoon on the bat of junior Cylie Halvorson, who sent the game into extras with one RBI and ended the game four innings later with another. Arkansas would go on to sweep Drake and fit in one more win over the Wildcats in-between the series, giving them three ranked wins on the young season.

> ROUNDING THIRD. No. 9 Arkansas baseball secured its first series win with two victories over Eastern Illinois, the first of which ended in the seventh inning thanks to 13 runs scored by the Razorbacks. The run-rule victory on Friday elevated manager Dave Van Horn to 800 wins as the head Hog. Arkansas put up 10 more runs on Saturday in their fifth win of the season.

> BEAMING WITH JOY. Arkansas’ final meet at Barnhill Arena this season resulted in a program high for the second consecutive week. The Gymbacks posted a new record of 49.525 on beam in the third rotation vs. Missouri Friday, highlighted by a 9.975 for graduate transfer Norah Flatley. It’s a new career high for Norah, and was good for first place on the night. Sophomore Kalyxta Gamiao also earned a career high, a 9.925, for a share of second place.

> ROARING 20’s. Senior day for Arkansas women’s basketball ended with a 78-65 victory over Texas A&M to get the Hogs to 20 wins on the year, making this the third 20-win season for the Razorbacks under head coach Mike Neighbors. Arkansas drained a season-high 13 3-pointers in their regular season finale as Samara Spencer led the way with 19 points.

Postseason play begins this week with the SEC Tournament on deck.

Titles and thrillers. Q and Z recap a big weekend in Arkansas sports, from the track teams winning SEC titles to a thriller down in Tuscaloosa, and everything in between.
