Razorback Brew 2/3: No Letting Up
Good morning. Both of Arkansas’ basketball teams are away from home this weekend with pivotal matchups on the docket. And we’ll tell you why one Razorback is earning national attention.
Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?
- Celebrating the birthday twins
- Defensive Razorbacks get another road test
- And much, much more!
Two Tough. The Mitchell twins are two tough dudes, as they celebrate a birthday by leading the Hogs to a win!
Go behind the scenes of the Razorbacks’ big victory over Texas A&M. Get a court-side seat to the best action on the floor. Go inside the huddles and locker room. Hear from players, coach Eric Musselman, and more in this week’s episode of The Follow.
> NO LETTING UP. A chance to get back to .500 in SEC play is in front of Razorback men’s basketball. The Hogs will take on South Carolina tomorrow afternoon for the first of three road contests in the next 12 days.
While Arkansas has won its last three conference matchups, USC has not been as fortunate. The Gamecocks have dropped six-straight SEC games, with five of them being by double-digits.
The Hogs have not only been beating their opponents of late, they’ve been absolutely stifling them on defense. Arkansas’ last four opponents have made just 34% of their field goals. USC has shot just 39% from the field this year.
Tip-off in Columbia will be at 2:30pm, and SEC Network will carry the game.
> LAND OF ENCHANTMENT. Three of Arkansas track and field’s best are receiving votes for The Bowerman watch list along with junior heptathlete Ayden Owens-Delerme, who remains among the top 10 athletes on the list. Senior sprinter Chris Bailey, senior jumper Carey McCleod, and sophomore jumper Wayne Pinnock have all received votes for the award’s first updated watch list.
The Razorbacks are out west today for the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, with field events commencing at 10am. Click here to view live results as they happen.
> HE WENT TO… Arkansas outfielder Jared Wegner has been named a preseason second-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. Jared batted .343 for Creighton last year and had a team-leading 11 home runs, 53 RBI and 11 stolen bases for the Bluejays to earn All-Big East first-team honors. He’ll look replicate that production in Fayetteville.
The Diamond Hogs are officially a top 10 team in five of the six major preseason polls for the 2023 baseball season. The USA Today’s coaches poll had the Razorbacks ranked sixth in its initial rankings. Check out where Arkansas ranks in all six polls here.
> HOT CORNER CONNECTION. SEC softball coaches are taking notice of Arkansas’ elite talent. Redshirt senior Chenise Delce and junior Hannah Gammill have been named preseason All-SEC this week by the league’s coaches. Chenise, who was the SEC Pitcher of the Year in 2022 after winning 19 games with a 2.12 ERA, is also on the USA Softball Player of the Year watch list. Hannah can say the same following a sophomore season that saw her hit .374 from the plate and belt 18 homers while holding down third base.
> POWER UP. Arkansas’ front court has been blessed this season by the play of Erynn Barnum. It’s no surprise that she’s the first Razorback to ever be named to the 2023 Katrina McClain Mid-Season Top 10 List, the award given to the best power forward in the country by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association. Erynn has started in all 24 games this year and leads the Hogs in scoring with 16.8 points per game.
Up next for the Razorbacks is a Sunday afternoon road trip to Auburn. Watch Coach Mike Neighbors preview the game here.
Leaving home with a purpose. The Hog basketball team is in search of its first true road win of the season at South Carolina tomorrow, and Z is here with his preview of the matchup.
