Razorback Brew 2/7: Wild Cats, Feral Hogs

Good morning. From the track to the hardwood, the Razorbacks are making moves this week. We’ll prep you for tonight’s battle between SEC rivals, and give you some nostalgia as well for your Tuesday morning.

One Arkansas: The Arkansas football program and One Arkansas NIL partnered up with Arkansas 211, a statewide program headquartered at the United Way of NWA, to provide over 400 meals to the local community. Hear from several Razorback players including Cameron BallChris Paul Jr., and more as they do their part in this episode of My Time.

Now, what else is steeping in today’s Brew?

  • Arkansas vs. Texas, 33 years later
  • Razorbacks take No. 1 spot
  • And much, much more!

Strollin’ with Nolan. Just over 33 years ago, No. 3 Arkansas men’s basketball took down Texas in a sold-out Frank Erwin Center, and head coach Nolan Richardson almost missed the ending after walking off the court with 14 seconds remaining.

Step into our DeLorean as we go back to 1990. Hear from Nolan, Matt Zimmerman and former Texas Head Coach Tom Penders as they discuss how it all went down in this special episode of Razorback Rewind.

> OKAY, UK. Arkansas men’s basketball will look to extend two different streaks tomorrow night in a road battle against Kentucky. The Hogs have won four-straight SEC matchups, as well as their last two games vs. the Wildcats. Personal achievement for head coach Eric Musselman is also on the line as he’s just one win away from 200 for his collegiate career.

Both teams are meeting with identical 16-7 records, and have come out victorious in four of their last five games. Kentucky, however, is 12-2 at home this year.

Tip-off inside Rupp Arena is set for a primetime 8pm showing on ESPN. Get set for the game with the latest episode of Courtside with Eric Musselman.

> UNOS & DOS. After dominating at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, Arkansas men’s track and field has taken over as the No. 1 men’s team in the USTFCCCA’s national rating index, moving up from No. 3 a week ago. The Razorbacks now lead the nation in the 4 x 400m relay, a 3:01.09 school record, and the triple jump thanks to freshman Jaydon Hibbert‘s leap of 54-10.75.

The Arkansas women’s track squad is at No. 2 this week and remain at the top in the 60m hurdles (8.13 average) and 400m (51.91). The Razorbacks are No. 2 in the pole vault (13-11.75), but Amanda Fassold took over sole possession of the collegiate lead with her winning height of 14-10.75 in Albuquerque.

> DELIVERING THE GOODS. Kevin Scanlon delivered for the Hogs, setting the school record for completion percentage in 1979 on his way to becoming the only quarterback in Arkansas history to be a unanimous all-conference selection.Scanlon’s 1979 completion percentage of 66.2 topped the list at Arkansas until Felipe Franks (68.5 in 2020) and KJ Jefferson (67.3 in 2021 and 68.0 in 2022) bested him each of the last three seasons.

Scanlon’s playing days as a Razorback speak volumes, but it’s what has come afterwards that captivated Hogs+ senior contributor Clay Henry. Read Henry’s latest piece for HogsPlus.com, and check out his interview on the latest Hog Pod.

> OFF TO DEUTSCHLAND. Former Arkansas soccer forward Jessica De Filippo is taking her talents overseas. She has signed with FFC Turbine Potsdam of the Frauen-Bundesliga, the top level of competition for women’s association football in Germany. Turbine Potsdam is one of the most successful clubs in the Frauen-Bundesliga, having won six league championships and two Union of European Football Associations Women’s Champions League titles.

Jessica’s breakout season in 2022 was an integral part in the Hogs’ 13-win campaign that ran all the way to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament. She led the team in goals (12), points (32) and shots (79). Six of those goals and 14 points came in NCAA Tournament play, and she led all players in the field.

> ON PAR WITH STANDARDS. Fresh off his win at the Latin American Amateur Championship last month, Mateo Fernandez de Oliveira carded an even-par round Monday to finish tied for sixth at the Hayt Invitational. Mateo had two even-par rounds to go with a four-under 68 to net his first top 10 finish of the year, and his 40 total pars from all three rounds was the third-most in the field. The Arkansas men’s golf team finished 12th at the event, its first of the Spring season.
