
Men’s Tennis Concludes Play at The Racquet Club 15K UTR Collegiate Invitational
MIDLAND, Texas. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team finished its first event of the fall Sunday at The Racquet Club 15K UTR Collegiate Invitational. Four members of the squad competed in the tournament including Arsene Pougault, Connor Smillie, Jakub Vrba and Ben Weintraub.
All four Razorbacks automatically qualified for the singles main draw with Arsene Pougault advancing to the quarterfinals. Pougault started the tournament with a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Vikas Deo to move on to the Round of 16. Pougault then defeated Lathan Skrobarcek 6-3, 6-2, before falling in the quarterfinals against Landon Ardila, 3-6, 4-6.
Smillie fell to Paul Inchauspe in the first round, 5-7, 2-6. After dropping down to the singles back draw, Smillie won two matches to advance to the semifinals, before ultimately losing to Emmett Potter, 4-6, 4-6.
Vrba bested Potter in the first round prior to falling in the Round of 16 to Matthias Kask in two sets. Vrba dropped his final singles match of the event in the consolation draw to Stewart Aronson in three sets.
Weintraub fell to Duncan Chan in three sets in the Round of 32 to move down to the singles back draw. Weintraub then won three consecutive matches to advance to the finals, before dropping a close three-set match to Potter.
The Hogs had two doubles teams featured in the main draw as Pougault competed with Weintraub while Smillie played alongside Vrba. The duo of Pougault and Weintraub fell in the opening round to Kapasi/Kuzmenok, 5-8. Smillie and Vrba dropped their Round of 16 match versus Arsic/Guglieri, 6-8.
Arkansas will travel to Tulsa, Okla. this weekend for the UTR Sports Collegiate Circuit from Sept. 12-14.
