Razorback MGolf Heads to Birmingham for SEC Match Play
FAYETTEVILLE – All 14 SEC men’s golf programs will converge on Birmingham, Ala., for the third annual SEC Match Play – hosted by Jerry Pate – which will take place Sept. 25-27. This year’s event will be played at the par 71, 7,226-yar Birmingham Country Club.
The course, event name and format have changed over its 35 years but Arkansas has experienced success in Birmingham of late. The Razorbacks finished second in 2018 as Julian Perico was individual medalist and set a program record with a 54-hole score of 197. The previous year (2017), Mason Overstreet carded a 10-under-par score of 200 to win the event. Also, Arkansas won the inaugural SEC Match Play in 2021 in a true match play format with wins over Mississippi State, Ole Miss, LSU and Vanderbilt.
For the second straight year, the SEC Match Play format will include 54 holes of stroke play – 36 on Monday (Sept. 25) and 18 on Tuesday (Sept. 26) – and, based on stroke play finish, one round of match play on Wednesday (Sept. 27) with the match play winner of the top two seeds after stroke play being declared champion.
The Razorbacks are coming off a solid opener with a third-place finish at the Folds of Honor Collegiate with four golfers placing among the top 25. That foursome – John Driscoll III (T8), Manuel Lozada (T12), John Daly II (T18) and Jacob Skov Olesen (T24) – will be back in the lineup for the SEC Match Play while freshman Thomas Curry will make his collegiate debut to round out the Razorback lineup.
After SEC Match Play, the Razorbacks return to action five days later as host of the Blessings Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 2-4).
