Razorbacks Add Two On Wednesday

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Fayetteville High guard Grayce Spangler and Illinois forward Macy Weaver signed National Letters of Intent joining the University of Arkansas women’s basketball team head coach Jimmy Dykes announced today.

Spangler is a 5-11 guard for the Bulldogs and has a long history of loving the Razorbacks. Her father, Shannon, lettered as a linebacker at Arkansas in the late 80’s and her mother, Stacy, was a Razorback cheerleader those same years.

Named the MVP of Arkansas’ Elite Camp, Spangler lead her team to a 21-5 overall record and an 11-2 mark in conference play as a junior. She is ranked No. 10 by ArkansasBasketballRankings.com. Spangler also plays for the Arkansas Banshees club team.

Jimmy Dykes about Grayce Spangler
“Grayce has grown up her whole life wanting to be a Razorback. Her dad, Shannon, was a member of the Razorback football team from 1986-90. Grayce is a tough, hard-nosed, and fierce guard that helps take us to a new level of competitiveness. We like her size, her ability to score as a guard and, most importantly, her passion to be a Razorback.”

Weaver is a 6-3 forward from Stillman Valley, Illinois, where she is a three-sport standout for the Cardinals. As a basketball player, Weaver ranked No. 9 in the country as a junior averaging 18.4 rebounds per game with 313 defensive and 148 offensive boards that season. She paced the Cardinals to a 26-8 overall record and an 8-2 mark in conference play as the team’s captain.

Last season, Weaver averaged 19.9 points per game and earned Associated Press All-State Second-Team honors in class 3A, she surpassed the 1,000-career point mark and was named Stillman Valley Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2016. Weaver also plays softball and volleyball for the Cardinals.

Weaver is moving to Fayetteville next year but not moving away from family. Her aunt, Francie Thomas, is a former student athletic trainer for the Razorbacks and lives about 30 minutes from campus. Weaver is just the fifth girls basketball player from her area to sign with a Power 5 Conference in the last 15 years and is the first to ink with a Southeastern Conference program.

Jimmy Dykes about Macy Weaver
“We feel like we got a steal in Macy Weaver. We had to beat out some really good teams in the Big Ten, Big 12 and the SEC to do it. Macy gives us a physical post presence who can really run. She is relentless as a rebounder and as a competitor.

Our staff is confident both Grayce and Macy will be great Razorbacks.”
