FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – No. 17 Arkansas defeated Memphis 2-1 in overtime Friday night at Razorback Field to advance to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead during the 42nd minute and would retain it until late in the 87th minute when Arkansas junior Jessi Hartzler scored the equalizer to force overtime, assisted by senior Lindsey Mayo. Mayo then scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 92nd minute of play that sealed the match for the Razorbacks – the team’s first NCAA Tournament win while hosting at home in program history.
“What a great game,” head coach Colby Hale said. “First, credit to Memphis. I thought they were very good. Our team doesn’t quit. The halftime and overtimes showed our belief. We played well enough to win and I thought we believed if we kept doing what we do that we would get the equalizer. Once we got to OT, it felt like momentum was on our side. It’s a great win and moment in Razorback Soccer history. This team has something special.”
With the win, Arkansas improves to 18-5-0 overall and 4-1-1 in the NCAA Tournament as it awaits the winner of No. 12 Clemson and Northeastern on Sunday, Nov. 13. The Razorbacks are also 3-1-0 this season in overtime, with victories against James Madison during the season opener on Aug. 19 and against Alabama on Sept. 22.
Memphis finishes its season 14-5-1 overall.
Hartzler is tied for third on the team with eight goals scored this season. Freshman Stefani Doyle earned seven shots in the match, her second-highest shot total this season since putting up eight shots against Alabama.
Arkansas outshot Memphis 16-14 and held a 3-1 edge in corners. Senior goalkeeper Cameron Carter also earned her 18th win on the season and tallied six saves in the contest, her highest mark since earning eight saves against then-No. 4 Florida on Sept. 16.
