FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas women’s tennis head coach Michael Hegarty announced the Razorbacks’ 2017 schedule Monday.
The 25-match slate features 11 home matches and 14 road tilts, including 15 matches against teams that participated in last year’s NCAA Tournament. Arkansas will welcome six opponents who were a 2016 NCAA Tournament team to the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center and will play the remaining nine on the road.
“The 2017 spring season promises to be an exciting one for our team,” Hegarty said. “We have prepared well this fall, and this schedule definitely provides us what we need in order to have a chance at a deep postseason run.”
The Razorbacks will open their 45th season with five straight road contests in the month of January, before their home opener on Feb. 5 at noon against Oklahoma of the Big 12.
Arkansas’ non-conference portion of its schedule is highlighted by a trip to Malibu, California, for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Kick-Off Weekend from Jan. 28-29, which takes place at 15 campus sites. The Razorbacks will compete against NC State and either Pepperdine or UNLV. The 15 schools that win both of their matches at these events will be invited to play in the 2017 ITA National Women’s Team Indoor Championship, hosted by Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, from Feb. 10-13.
The Razorbacks will play its first three Southeastern Conference matches at home, beginning March 3, when they host Missouri. Of Arkansas’ 13 SEC opponents this season, 10 made the postseason in 2016.
The 2017 campaign will mark Arkansas’ 14th season under Coach Hegarty, who is the program’s all-time winningest coach with 179 victories and has led the Razorbacks to eight NCAA Team Tournament appearances, including two straight.
Arkansas is coming off a 2016 season in which it captured 16 wins, earned the program’s 14th appearance in the NCAA Team Championship, and earned victories over seven teams in the final ITA rankings, including No. 30 Wichita State, No. 12 Auburn and No. 19 Texas A&M.
