Razorbacks, Arkansas alums featured in Trackwired Grand Prix

FAYETTEVILLE – John McDonnell Field will host the Trackwired Arkansas Grand Prix on Friday, June 23, as a mix of current Razorbacks and Arkansas alums are entered in several events.

Admission to the meet is free with entry available through the main entry location at Razorback Road and Meadow Street where the John McDonnell Plaza is located. The SEC clear bag policy applies.

Parking after 5 p.m. is open on campus. Prior to 5 p.m. spectators are directed to the ‘FB Parking Lot’ on the corner of Razorback Road and Holtz Drive.

Field events begin at 1 p.m. with the men’s hammer followed by the men’s discus at 2 p.m. Running events start at 4 p.m. and conclude at 7 p.m.

The Grand Prix meet provides a competition prior to various national championship selection meets occurring in July as well as an opportunity for those still seeking qualifying marks for major championship meets being held this summer.

Both the USATF Championships and Jamaican Championships will be held July 6-9. During those two meets, the top three finishers in each event can qualify for the World Athletics Championships if they have a qualifying mark or high enough world ranking.

NCAA champion Phillip Lemonious headlines the 110m hurdle field that will include teammates Tre’Bien Gilbert, Matthew Lewis-Banks, Tai Brown, Ayden Owens-Delerme and Daniel Spejcher.

Lemonious won the NCAA title in 13.24, which is currently equal No. 13 on the 2023 world list and equal No. 2 among Jamaicans. Rasheed Broadbell is the leading Jamaican this season at 13.08, third best in the world, while Hansle Parchment shares a 13.24 time with Lemonious.

NCAA discus silver medalist Rojé Stona is schedule to compete in the shot put and discus along with teammate Jordan West. Heading into the Jamaican Championships, Stona is the top Jamaican discus thrower with a mark of 225-2 (68.64) that ranks sixth best in the world.

Members of the Razorback women’s 400m crew racing Friday include Amber Anning, Paris Peoples, and Joanne Reid while Rosey Effiong competes in the 200m. Arkansas alum Jada Baylark will race in the 100m.

Upcoming competitions for Razorbacks include the Central American and Caribbean Championships in San Salvador, where Owens-Delerme and Yariel Soto Torrado will represent Puerto Rico in the decathlon on July 3rd and 4th.

In the Grand Prix meet, Owens-Delerme will race in the 110m hurdles and throw the discus while Soto Torrado competes in the pole vault and discus along with Spejcher, who will also compete in the 110m hurdles.

Arkansas alum Hunter Woodhall races in the 400m as he prepares for the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships being held in Paris from July 8-17 at the Charlety Stadium. Woodhall competes in the first round of the 100m on July 11 while the first round of the 400m is on July 16.

Recent performances by Woodhall in Europe this month include a season best of 46.52 followed by a 46.61, which are equal third and the seventh fastest times he has produced. His career best is 46.22 from 2019.

Another Razorback alum, Taliyah Brooks, will contest the 100m hurdles and long jump. Brooks produced a career best score of 6,330 points earlier this season to win a heptathlon competition in Italy. She currently ranks equal seventh in the world for 2023 and is equal second among Americans.

Joining Brooks in the long jump is Tara Davis-Woodhall, who trains in Fayetteville with Arkansas associate head coach Travis Geopfert. Davis-Woodhall has the world best all-conditions long jump this season with a leap of 23-4.5 (7.12) and the second-best wind-legal mark of 23-2.5 (7.07), which was set at John McDonnell Field in May.

The men’s sprints will include a crew of Razorbacks with Connor Washington in the 100m and 200m while Brandon Battle and James Benson II contest the 200m and 400m. Chris Bailey will race in the 400m. The 200m field also includes Arkansas alum Marqueze Washington.

Arkansas alums Shafiqua Maloney (800m) along with Logan Jolly (1,500m) and Carina Viljoen (1,500m) headline the middle-distance races. Razorback freshman Ainsley Erzen will also be in the 800m race while the 1,500m includes Claire McCune and Katie McCune.

Razorbacks Elias Schreml and Reuben Reina will race at 800m while Grant Williams competes in the 400m hurdles. The high jump will have Tomas Ferrari and Kason O’Riley competing, while Ryan Brown and Shakwon Coke are entered in the long jump.

Arkansas alum Erich Sullins will throw the hammer. The triple jump field includes Jah-Nhai Perinchief and Jalen Tate, who train in Fayetteville.
