Razorbacks Continue SEC Play On The Road

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark – Coming off a 3-0 week in the state of Alabama, highlighted by a 5-2 win at Alabama in its Southeastern Conference opener on Sunday, the Arkansas men’s tennis team continues play on the road with two more SEC matches at Tennessee on Friday and No. 11 Georgia on Sunday.

“SEC road matches are great challenges and Tennessee and Georgia are among the most difficult,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “We are will need to play our best matches of the year and we look forward to the competition.”

Arkansas (7-5, 1-0 SEC) swept both matches of a doubleheader at Alabama State by the same 5-0 score on Friday, before concluding the weekend with a 5-2 win at Alabama on Sunday, to run its win streak to five matches.

Mike Redlicki (No. 6) and Jose Salazar (No. 24) remain in the top 25 in the latest Oracle/ITA national singles rankings, and they also combine for the nation’s No. 56 doubles team. Arkansas is the only team in the SEC and one of four teams in the nation with two players ranked in the top 25 of the singles rankings.

Including the fall season, Redlicki is 21-5 overall and 12-2 against ranked opponents in singles play, while Salazar is 19-5 overall and 3-3 against ranked opponents. Salazar is also a team-best 8-2 in singles play this spring. The duo is 8-2 in doubles play, including 5-1 this spring.

Den Toom is 14-9 in singles play and 2-2 against ranked opponent in singles play, including 7-3 overall and 1-1 against ranked opponents this spring. The team of Oscar Mesquida and Adam Sanjurjo has a team-best 8-3 record in doubles play and has won six matches in a row.

Tennessee enters the weekend 8-6 overall and 0-2 in SEC play, highlighted by a 7-0 win over Tulsa in the nonconference. Tennessee has one ranked singles player in No. 86 Timo Stodder and two ranked doubles teams in Luis Valero and Jack Schipanski (No. 21) and Scott Jones and Timo Stodder (No. 45).

Georgia was a big mover in the Oracle/ITA Rankings, rising 11 spots to No. 11 after winning at Vanderbilt and No. 15 Kentucky this past weekend. Georgia is 6-5 overall and 2-0 in SEC play and advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship earlier this season.

The Bulldogs have a trio of ranked singles players in No. 26 Wayne Montgomery, No. 46 Emil Reinberg and No. 99 Nathan Ponwith and three ranked doubles teams in Jan Zielinski and Robert Loeb (No. 30), Zielinski and Walker Duncan (No. 46), and Ponwith and Reinberg (No. 60).

Georgia has also won 17 straight regular-season SEC matches and 25 straight SEC regular-season home SEC matches entering the weekend.

After play this weekend, Arkansas returns home for seven straight home matches over four match days, beginning with No. 23 South Carolina on March 16. Arkansas will also host No. 15 Florida (March 18) and No. 16 Mississippi State (March 23) during the home stand.
