Razorbacks Defeat Omaha, Charlotte on Day Three of Wooo Pig Classic
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 7/8 Arkansas Softball team improved to 18-1 by downing Omaha (4-2) and Charlotte (9-0, 5 inn.) to increase the Hogs’ win streak to 16 games on Saturday evening at Bogle Park during the third day of the Wooo Pig Classic.
Thirteen of the Hogs’ 18 wins have come by way of run-rule this season. The Razorbacks are also on a 16-game winning streak, which is tied for the second-longest in program history, trailing only a 19-game winning streak in 2022.
With a walk in game one and two hits in the win over Charlotte, Brinli Bain extended her reached-base streak to 19 games, improving her program-record for consecutive games reached by a freshman to start their career.
Kailey Wyckoff highlighted the Hogs in the win over Omaha with a 2-3 day at the plate that featured a pair of home runs, three RBI and two runs scored. She gave Arkansas a 3-2 lead with a two-run blast in the fourth before adding insurance with a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth. It marked her third career multi-homer game and first as a Razorback.
Saylor Timmerman improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one against in four innings against Omaha. Robyn Herron earned her first save of the season by tossing three scoreless innings and striking out six while allowing just three hits and a walk in three innings of work.
Dakota Kennedy led the Hogs with three RBI in the win over Charlotte, courtesy of a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, her fourth of the season. Reagan Johnson (2-3, 2B, 2R) and Brinli Bain (2-2, 2B, RBI) also highlighted the Razorback offense.
Cam Harrison improved to 3-0 by spinning four innings of one-hit ball while striking out one. Harrison carried a perfect game for 3.2 innings before Charlotte’s Jenna Lord singled through the left side. Lexie King then came on in relief to close out the run-rule with a scoreless fifth inning.
GAME ONE
Saylor Timmerman made the start for Arkansas, while Omaha turned to left-hander Grace Hornbuckle
In the top of the first, Timmerman retired the first two batters faced courtesy of a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop. Omaha put a pair of runners on with a walk and a single through the left side. Marra Cramer then gave Omaha the early lead with an infield single deep in the hole at shortstop that the Mavericks’ Katherine Johnson scored on from second base.
Arkansas tied the game in the bottom of the first inning when Tianna Bell singled down the third-base line to score Reagan Johnson, who initially reached on an infield single.
Omaha would then regain the lead in the top of the second inning, courtesy of a solo shot to center field off the bat of Sammy Schmidt. Hornbuckle retired the Hogs in order in the bottom of the second inning.
Both teams were kept off the scoreboard in the third inning. Atalyia Rijo and Karlie Davison turned an impressive 6-4-3 double play in the top half, while Johnson walked and stole a base in the bottom of the third.
Timmerman pitched a scoreless top of the fourth inning, with the only damage being a one-out ground-rule double from Ava Rongisch.
In the home half of the fourth inning, Bell singled off the top of the wall in left-center field. Kailey Wyckoff later gave Arkansas a 3-2 lead with a two-out two-run home run to dead center field, her first of the season. Ramsey Walker followed with a single after Wyckoff’s homer and Rijo and Johnson later walked to load the bases, but Omaha would escape the jam courtesy of a flyout to left field.
Robyn Herron entered in relief of Timmerman in the fifth inning. She would promptly strikeout two while throwing a scoreless inning and allowing only a walk. Brinli Bain walked in the bottom of the fifth to extend her reached base streak to 18 games.
Herron fanned two more in the sixth inning while allowing the Mavericks’ Ava Rongish to reach on a single up the middle.
Wyckoff crushed a home run to right field to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, her second of the game. It also marked her third career multi-homer game and her first as a Razorback.
Omaha did not go away quietly in the seventh inning. Rylinn Groff led off the frame with a single. A hit batter and a Katherine Johnson single loaded the bases with one out. Herron would be unfazed, however, as she issued a strikeout and a foul out to Ramsey Walker near the right-field line for the final out of the game.
Timmerman earned the win for Arkansas after striking out one and allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk in four innings of work. Robyn Herron earned her second save of the season after throwing three scoreless innings in which she struck six and allowed three hits and a walk.
Grace Hornbuckle (0-1)took the loss for Omaha after yielding three runs on five hits and a walk while striking out one in 3.2 innings.
Game Two
Cam Harrison breezed through the 49ers’ lineup over the course of the first three innings of play by issuing two lineouts, a strikeout, three flyouts, and three groundouts
Brinli Bain got Arkansas on the board with a double down the right-field line that scored Dakota Kennedy, who reached on a fielder’s choice.
Arkansas extended its lead to 5-0 courtesy of a Charlotte fielding error in a rundown that allowed Atalyia Rijo to score and a three-run home run to center field from Dakota Kennedy.
In the bottom of the third, Karlie Davison walked with two outs and advanced to third on a double down the left-field line from Reagan Johnson. Dakota Kennedy then loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Ella McDowell would push the Hogs’ lead to six with an RBI single before a pair of wild pitches plated two more to increase the lead to 8-0.
Charlotte third baseman Jenna Lord singled through the left side with two outs in the fourth inning to spoil Harrison’s no-hit bid. Harrison would issue a popout in the ensuing at-bat to complete the scoreless frame.
Cam Harrison added the Hogs’ final run of the night courtesy of a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning that scored Kasey Wood, who entered the game for Brinli Bain after Bain walked.
Lexi King completed the run-rule triumph with a scoreless fifth inning, allowing one runner to reach courtesy of a one-out single.
Charlotte’s (12-9) Aubrey Yarnell (2-1) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings of work.
NOTABLES
- Arkansas increased its winning streak to 16 games. The Hogs’ 16-game winning streak is tied for the second-longest in program history, trailing only a 19-game winning streak in 2019 and tying a 14-game winning streak a year ago. It marks the 11th season in program history in which the Hogs have recorded a winning streak of 10+ games.
- Freshman Brinli Bain extended her reached-base streak to 19 games. She has now reached safely in all 19 of her collegiate games. She is the first freshman to reach in the first 19 games of her career in program history.
- Kailey Wyckoff recorded her third career multi-homer game and her first as a Razorback. Wyckoff also had multi-homer games while at Texas Tech on May 8, 2024 (Iowa State) and Feb. 18, 2023 (UTEP).
- Reagan Johnson now has 246 career hits. Johnson needs 16 more hits to break the all-time Arkansas career hits record, held by Hannah McEwen (261)
