Razorbacks Earn 17th Straight NCAA Regional Bid

FAYETTEVILLE – The Arkansas men’s golf program will be the #9 seed at the NCAA Amherst Regional, played May 12-14 in Amherst, Va., at the Popular Grove Golf Club (par 72), it was announced today by the NCAA on GOLF Channel.

Arkansas is playing in its 17th straight NCAA Regional. In the 35 NCAA Regionals contested since its inception in 1989, the Razorbacks have now been represented in 34 Regionals, its 31st as a team and four times with an individual. The streak ties LSU for the fourth-longest, current consecutive streak for a team berth at an NCAA Regional behind Texas (35), Georgia (27) and Alabama (19).

The 13-team Amherst Regional field has three of the nation’s top 10 teams, including top-seeded LSU (#6), second-seeded Oklahoma (#7) and third-seeded Vanderbilt (#9). Rounding out the field – in order of seeding – are Pepperdine (#19), Tennessee (#30), Arizona (#31), Stanford (#42), Wake Forest (#43), Arkansas (#55), Florida Gulf Coast (#56), Kent State (#78), Princeton (#82) and Howard (#262). The Amherst Regional will additionally have 10 individuals.

Arkansas played 11 of the 13 Amherst Regional teams during the season and posted a 12-8 record, including a 3-0 mark versus Tennessee, a 2-1 mark versus Vanderbilt and 1-0 marks versus Arizona, Stanford, Wake Forest, Kent State and Princeton. Arkansas was 1-1 versus Florida Gulf Coast and Wake Forest and was a combined 0-5 versus top seeds LSU and Oklahoma. In fact, 12 of the Razorbacks’ 25 wins versus the full NCAA field have come against teams in the Amherst Regional.

Overall, the SEC got 14 teams in the NCAA field, including five in the Amherst Regional, with four of the six #1 seeds.

The top five teams from each of the six NCAA Regionals – as well as the highest placing individual not on an advancing team – will go on to compete for the NCAA Championships, May 23-28 in Carlsbad, Calif., at Omni La Costa – Champions Course.

The Razorbacks won the 1991 NCAA Central Regional and have seven runner-up finishes to their credit, including twice over the last four years.

Arkansas has advanced from a Regional to the NCAA Championship 20 times as well as four additional times when just an individual advanced.

The Razorbacks had a tough fall campaign but turned its season around in the spring. The team posted a 295.92 scoring average in the fall and was just 16-22-0. However, Arkansas won its spring opener, defending its title at the Palmas del Mar Collegiate, finishing fourth at the always tough CABO Collegiate and turning in a respectable 10th-place finish (of 17 teams) at the Valspar Collegiate, which featured 14 of the nation’s top 41 teams including five of the top eight. The Razorbacks also had a runner-up finish at the Columbia Spring Invitational to post a 54-38 record in the spring.

The team improved its scoring average by nearly 12 strokes to 283.95 in seven events this spring, which would rank second-best in program history for season scoring average behind last year’s 282.97. At the SEC Championship, Arkansas’s 54-hole score of 839 is the third-best team total at the event.
