Razorbacks Go 2-0 at Music City Classic

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Arkansas women’s basketball (7-1) defeated Southern Illinois (1-4), 73-63, to win both of its games at the Music City Classic in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Hogs faced a 12-point deficit early in the first half but battled back to lead by as many as 17 points in the fourth quarter.

First Quarter – 11-19

  • The Salukis controlled the tip and scored on their first possession via Alayna Kraus. Kraus followed it up with a three-pointer to make it 5-0.
  • Arkansas started 0-3 from the field before making its first shot at the 7:58 mark, a three from Emily Robinson.
  • Wyvette Mayberry hit a three to make it 6-7 but picked up two early fouls.
  • SIU went 3-3 from the field after a 3-minute scoring drought and had a 11-6 lead at the media timeout. The 8-0 run was ended by a layup from Bonnie Deas for her first points of the game.
  • The Salukis ended the first quarter on a 12-5 run.

Second Quarter – 31-31

  • SIU scored on its first two possessions to go up 23-11.
  • Freshman Harmonie Ware entered the game and scored five straight points to cut the lead to 25-18.
  • Both teams traded threes midway through the quarter, with two straight from Taleyah Jones to cut the Salukis’ lead to five at 31-26.
  • Jones hit her third straight to enter double figures, put the Hogs on a 11-0 run and make it 31-29 SIU.
  • Arkansas had a chance to take the lead but Cristina Sanchez missed two free throws to keep it tied at 31-31.
  • Deas collected eight rebounds in the first half.
  • Southern Illinois shot 41% (12-29) from the field compared to the Hogs’ 33% (10-30) in the first half.

Third Quarter – 53-41

  • Arkansas took its first lead of the game, 33-31, on Ashlynn Chlarson’s first points of the game.
  • The Hogs went on a 7-0 run early in the third with four free throws from Deas and a three from Wyvette Mayberry to take a 40-32 lead.
  • SIU went on a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought, but Arkansas didn’t capitalize and went 1-7 from the field.
  • The Razorbacks led 46-39 at the media timeout.
  • Robinson hit another three to put Arkansas back up 10, 51-41, at the 1:22 mark.
  • SIU picked up its 10th turnover of the game and gave the Hogs the ball back with 19 seconds left. Jones was fouled and made both of her free throws to give Arkansas its largest lead of the game, 12 points.
  • The Salukis failed to score over the final 2:15 of the quarter.

Fourth Quarter – 73-63

  • Jenna Lawrence scored Arkansas’ first five points of the fourth.
  • The Hogs went on a 9-0 run midway through the fourth to go up 64-47.
  • SIU went 5-7 from the field to cut Arkansas’ lead to seven points with 1:47 to play.
  • Arkansas made nine free throws in the fourth to stay ahead of the Salukis.

Game Notes

  • Taleyah Jones led all scorers with 23 points, her fourth 20-point game of the season.
  • Arkansas had five turnovers in the first three quarters but committed eight in the final 10 minutes.
  • The Razorbacks joined Stetson as the only teams of the eight in the Music City Classic field to win both of their games.
