Scouting Arkansas
The Razorbacks (12-15, 3-7 SEC) have celebrated small victories all season and they do so again this week heading into the Texas A&M game. In the team’s most recent contest against LSU, sophomore Kiara Williams stepped up with a career-best 19 points and nine rebounds. She went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. The Razorbacks outscored the Tigers 19-13 in the final frame erasing a 13-point deficit in the final 10 minutes.
Junior Malica Monk leads the team averaging 16.0 points per game followed by graduate student Devin Cosper with 14.4 ppg and sophomore Jailyn Mason with 10.7 ppg. Williams is the team’s leading rebounder grabbing 7.0 rebounds per game.
Scouting No. 17 Texas A&M
The Aggies enter the game ranked No. 17 in the Associated Press poll this week. They are sixth ranked opponent Arkansas has faced this season. Texas A&M is paced by national freshman of the year candidate Chennedy Carter who averages 21.6 ppg. She is one of four Aggies who average double figures this season.
Texas A&M is another good free throw shooting team, leading both the SEC and the nation with 477 made free throws. They are first in the league shooting 76.9% from the line.
The Arkansas Coaching Tree
Remember that game “Seven Degrees from Kevin Bacon”? Well, you could play that with the Arkansas coaching staff. Razorback head coach Mike Neighbors was a director of ops under Gary Blair. Blair is currently the head coach at Texas A&M. Blair’s associate head coach is Kelly Bond-White who was an assistant with Blair at Arkansas. TAMU’s assistant coach Amy Wright played at Arkansas for Blair. Mississippi State head coach Vic Schaefer was an assistant at Arkansas under Blair while Neighbors was the director of ops. Schaefer and his associate head coach Johnnie Harris were both at Arkansas and followed Blair to Texas A&M before taking over at Mississippi State.
