Razorbacks’ Season Ends at NCAA Amherst Regional

AMHERST, Va. – The 2024-25 season for Arkansas men’s golf came to an end after a seventh-place finish (852 / +12) at the NCAA Amherst Regional, played at the par-70 Popular Grove Golf Club. Individually, Mark Stockdale tied for sixth and Thomas Curry tied for 20th.

Arkansas ended its season by playing in its 17th straight NCAA Regional and in 31 of the 36 Regionals held since 1989. (NOTE: Arkansas has been represented in 35 of the 36 Regionals as it has had an individual qualify four times.)

Arkansas was in fourth place early in the final round before play was suspended due to inclement weather on Tuesday afternoon. When play resumed Wednesday morning, the Razorbacks were overtaken by a hot Wake Forest squad. The Deamon Deacons were in eighth place after 36 holes but fired the best round at -15 and finished in fourth. Pepperdine, in seventh after 36 holes, carded a 3-under-par round and moved up two places to grab the fifth and final spot to advance to the NCAA Championships. The top five included #7 Oklahoma (-10), #18 Vanderbilt (-6), #30 Tennessee (-5), #43 Wake Forest (-1) and #19 Pepperdine (+9).

Arizona, ranked 31st, and Arkansas each turned in a round of 286 (+6) for the final round to miss the cut by one and three strokes, respectively. Arkansas did finish ahead of #42 Stanford (+13) as well as top-seeded and sixth-ranked LSU (+14).

Stockdale saved his best for last. The sophomore just missed advancing as an individual, shooting a season-best, 3-under-par 207 (69-68-70). It was his second top 10 of the season and his first tournament to post an under par score this season. Stockdale was T11 after his opening round 69 but had a season-best 68 in round two and stayed among the top 10 over the final two rounds. In the final round, he birdied his second hole, the par-5 11th, but dropped a shot on the 13th hole prior to play being suspended. When the final round resumed today, he suffered a bogey on the 502-yard, par-4 15th only to get back to even par with a birdie on the 18th. He closed the Regional with nine straight pars to card his even-par 70. Overall, Stockdale carded 38 pars over 54 holes to rank second in the field.

Curry finished strong and recorded his fifth top 20 of the season, tying for the most by a Razorback this season. Like Stockdale, he birdied his second hole and was 1-under before play was suspended. When play resumed, he opened with a double and single. He would also bogey his 13th and 15th holes to stand at 4-over with three holes to play. However, the sophomore finished birdie, birdie, par for a 2-over 72 in the final round and a 54-hole, 1-over total of 211 (70-69-72).

John Daly II, who led the team and was sixth in the field with 12 birdies over the 54 holes, tied for 46th (+8) and Erich Fortlage, who was second on the team with 34 pars for the Regional, tied for 55th (+11). Gerardo Gomez tied Stockdale for the best round by a Razorback for round three with an even par 70. The freshman tied for 64th (+13).

For the year, Arkansas won the Palmas del Mar Collegiate for the second straight time while Fortlage (Palmas del Mar) and Daly II (Columbia Spring Invitational) each won individual titles. Fortlage (Freshman) and Daly (Golfer) each earned SEC weekly honors for their wins as well as Curry (Golfer) for his strong performance at the CABO Collegiate.
