Razorbacks To Compete In UTSA Cup

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas men’s tennis team continues its fall schedule this weekend at the UTSA Cup in San Antonio, Texas. The Razorbacks will send a quartet of players to the tournament: Johan den Toom, Jacob Herndon, Austin Robles and Juan Marino.

“We’re really looking forward to competing this weekend,” head coach Andy Jackson said. “The event is set up to where we can play four singles matches and two doubles matches for three days. I think that will be good us and I look forward to the play this weekend.”

Through just two tournaments, four different players have wins over ranked opponents, led by Mike Redlicki, who won the Southern Intercollegiate singles title and has gone 5-1 against ranked opponents this fall. Den Toom is another player with a ranked singles win and has also combined with Jose Salazar for a win against a ranked doubles team.

Redlicki and Salazar won’t be in action this weekend, but the duo completed historic runs to the Round of 16 at the ITA All-American, picking up the program’s first wins in an ITA National Tournament main draw since 2008.

“Our group as a whole has gained confidence in the fall,” Jackson said. “Mike and Jose have made a lot of progress. Other guys have made progress as well that we haven’t seen in the results, but I think we will begin seeing results as the fall continues.”

Eight teams consisting of four singles players and two doubles players will be placed in two groups and play a round robin on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, teams from group one will play teams from group two according to their finish in group play.

Participating teams include Arkansas, Incarnate Word (A/B teams), Lamar (A/B teams), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, UT Arlington and host UTSA. Arkansas was drawn into Group 1 with UTSA, Incarnate Word A and Lamar B. A team champion will be declared at the end of competition.

Friday Schedule:

Arkansas vs. UTSA (doubles/singles) at 9 a.m.
Arkansas vs. Incarnate Word A (doubles) at 2 p.m.

Saturday Schedule:

Arkansas vs. Incarnate Word A (singles) at 9 a.m.
Arkansas vs. Lamar B (doubles/singles) at 12 p.m.

Sunday Schedule:

Group 1 Winner vs. Group 2 Winner (singles/doubles)
Group 1 Runner-Up vs. Group 2 Runner-Up (singles/doubles)
Group 1 Third Place vs. Group 2 Third Place (singles/doubles)
Group 1 Fourth Place vs. Group 2 Fourth Place (singles/doubles)
