Razorbacks Travel to Tennessee for Three-Match Road Trip
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Arkansas men’s tennis team (8-2) hits the road this weekend for three matches in The Volunteer State to face Memphis, MTSU and Tennessee State.
The Razorbacks begin their road trip in Memphis to face the Tigers (2-5) on Friday, Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. before a doubleheader on Sunday, Jan. 9 against MTSU (3-4) at 12 p.m. in Murfreesboro and Tennessee State (0-0) at 6 p.m. in Nashville.
Last time out, the Hogs swept their weekend with home wins against Nebraska, Wichita State and Lamar. Arkansas claimed the doubles point and took three singles matches en route to a 4-0 victory over the Huskers. In the narrow win over the Shockers, Božo Barun clinched the match at the top spot as the Razorbacks secured four consecutive singles courts after dropping the doubles point to defeat Wichita State, 4-3. The Hogs obtained their third victory of the weekend over the Cardinals as Arthur Bellegy, Benni Emesz and Connor Smillie all grabbed singles wins in the 4-0 victory.
Memphis is 2-5 overall and 1-0 in AAC play this year after losses to No. 8 Kentucky and LSU. The Tigers are led by No. 78 Conor Gannon in the top spot and Pablo Alemany at the No. 2 position. Gannon and Moritz Kudernatsch, who has played on court three all season, are tied for the team-lead in singles wins (4). No. 59 Gannon and Sam Reeve hold a 3-2 doubles record together this spring while competing at the top spot.
MTSU is coming off a 4-3 home loss yesterday to Vanderbilt after two previous losses last weekend against Auburn and Alabama. The Blue Raiders are 3-5 overall this year and will host Indiana on Friday before their match against Arkansas. MTSU is headlined by Karim Al-Amin and Jakub Kroslak, who have primarily played at the No. 1 and 2 positions this spring while earning three singles victories each. Ondrej Horak, Shu Matsuoka and Kacper Szymkowiak have all collected at least four wins in singles competition between courts two through five. In doubles, the tandem of Al-Amin and Horak are ranked No. 70 in the latest ITA rankings.
Tennessee State will open its 2025 regular season against the Razorbacks after an 8-19 campaign in 2024, going 4-1 in Horizon League play and ended last year with a 4-3 loss to top-seeded Cleveland State in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament. The Tigers return two of their top singles players from last season in Jonasz Dziopak and Taj Hibbert, who posted a combined 21 singles victories last spring while primarily competing on the top three courts. The duo of Hibbert and Rohan Loubser led Tennessee State in dual doubles wins a year ago playing at the No. 3 position.
