Razorbacks Complete Third Day of Practice

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. Under cooler conditions and in front of an estimated 300 fans in attendance, the Arkansas football team wrapped up its third practice of the year.

The offensive unit continued to work on its various packages, including the Wildcat formation. Head coach Houston Nutt said he has been impressed with the carryover of information from spring workouts the players have shown so far during these preseason sessions.

“We are trying to get through the playbook,” Nutt said. “We’re adding some things each day, so there is some thinking going on. We had a few missed assignments, but that is to be expected when you are trying to hit a lot of different scenarios.”

The defense saw an addition of a new face as junior-college transfer Walner Leandre made his first appearance on the practice fields for the Razorbacks. Nutt is excited about what the Tampa, Fla., native may be able to bring to the secondary.

“We’ll try to catch him up and give him a crash course, and hopefully it won’t be too long before we get (Brandon) Barnett in here,” Nutt said in reference to the sophomore tail back out of Texarkana.

Nutt also mentioned that freshman cornerback Greg Gatson may be joining the team closer to the start of the fall academic semester.

As the players continued to work hard on plays and defensive assignments, Nutt said he was pleased with the attitudes of upperclassmen like Marcus Monk, Marcus Harrison, Weston Dacus, Robert Felton and Jonathan Luigs.

“I see guys that are trying to lead and take ownership of this team,” Nutt said.

After dressing out in shorts and helmets through the first three days, the players are scheduled to wear shoulder pads for the first time during Tuesday’s practice before going to full pads on Thursday.

The Razorback football team is set to resume practice Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on the fields located south of Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium. The workouts will be open to the public for the rest of the week. Log on to www.hogwired.com for continued coverage of Arkansas football.
