A record-breaking 2023 season for Wilson included an American 400m record indoors, running the fastest split ever indoors on a world best 4 x 400m relay, along with a collection of five collegiate records being set in the 400m and 600m.
After announcing her arrival in setting 10 Arkansas school records during her debut season as a Razorback, Wilson’s encore season included being part of eight collegiate records among individual and relay superlatives in 2023.
Her ability to manage the 400m and 400m hurdles in the same meet, and then on the same day during championship meets was an extraordinary display that included a trio of 400m collegiate records along the way in lowering the mark to 49.13, which ranks No. 4 on the U.S. all-time list with the No. 9 performance.
The record breaking started in earnest for Wilson as she ran 1:25.16 to break the collegiate record in 600m at the Razorback Invitational on January 13, bettering the previous mark of 1:25.80 set by Athing Mu of Texas A&M in 2021. Wilson’s time ranks No. 7 performer with the No. 9 performance on the U.S. all-time list.
During the NCAA Indoor Championships held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Wilson set an American and collegiate record of 49.48 seconds in claiming the 400m title. Wilson set a then PR of 50.69 in the prelims.
She also anchored the Razorbacks 4 x 400m relay in 49.19, the fastest split ever recorded indoors, as Arkansas produced a world best of 3:21.75 which bettered the world record of 3:23.27 set by Russia in 2006. The split by Wilson bettered the previous indoor best of 49.54 set by Athing Mu in 2021.
The Arkansas relay performance bettered the previous collegiate indoor record of 3:24.09 by the Razorbacks in 2022 as well as the collegiate outdoor record of 3:21.93 set by Kentucky in 2022.
The collegiate 400m record was broken during the indoor conference weekend with a 50.33 by Rhasidat Adeleke of Texas on February 25 at the Big 12 Championships in Lubbock. Then at the SEC Championships on the same day, Florida’s Talitha Diggs lowered the collegiate record to 50.15, which also broke the American record. The American and collegiate record heading into 2023 was 50.34 set by USC’s Kendall Ellis in 2018.
After opening the indoor season with a 600m collegiate record, Wilson finished as runner-up to teammate Rosey Effiong (51.02) in the 400m at the Tyson Invitational with a 51.14 and anchored the runner-up 4 x 400m (3:28.43) to a professional group of sprinters with a third leg split of 50.59.
At the time Wilson’s split was the fastest ever by a collegian for an indoor third leg, which was latter surpassed by teammate Rosey Effiong with a 50.57 in the NCAA final. Wilson had bettered the previous collegiate best of 50.60 set by Razorback Shafiqua Maloney in 2022.
Racing in the 800m for the first time, Wilson registered a winning debut of 2:02.13 at the Arkansas Qualifier. She raced at that distance in the SEC Championships, repeating her 2:02.13 as silver medalist in the conference meet. Wilson anchored the gold medal 4 x 400m (3:27.57) in 51.42.
The outdoor season started at the Texas Relays for the Razorbacks and Wilson anchored the sprint medley relay to a runner-up finish as she split 2:04.50 on the anchor 800m leg as Arkansas broke the school record of 3:42.36 set in 2015 with a 3:41.51 effort.
In the Invitational 4 x 400m relay, an anchor leg carry of 49.68 produced a runner-up finish of 3:24.45 for the Razorbacks.
Contesting her first double of the outdoor campaign, Wilson set a then world-leading time of 53.23 in the 400m hurdles at Florida’s Tom Jones Memorial over a field that included professional Anna Hall (54.48), and Kentucky’s Masai Russell (55.39).
The following day a 49.51 winning time in the 400m bettered the previous outdoor collegiate record of 48.57 set by Athing Mu in 2021, while it was now just 0.03 from Wilson’s absolute record established indoors. Finishing behind Wilson were Adeleke (49.90) and Effiong (50.93).
Competition in the pair of events at the SEC Championships meant Wilson had two finals separated by an hour and a half. In the prelims, which separated the pair of events with the 400m hurdles on day one and the 400m on day two, Wilson first ran 53.76 in the 400m hurdles, and then delivered a 49.40 collegiate record in the 400m.
In the SEC final, another collegiate record performance plunged the 400m mark down to 49.13 as Wilson registered a victory by over a second with Tierra Robinson-Jones (50.54) runner-up and Florida’s Diggs in third (50.74). The 49.13 also ranks Wilson 18th on the world all-time list, and No. 5 on the American all-time list.
A 53.28 victory in the 400m hurdles had Wilson nearly winning by two full seconds over Kentucky’s Russell (55.21) and Florida’s Vanessa Watson (55.59).
A pair of meet records followed for Wilson during the NCAA West Preliminary rounds as she produced times of 50.15 and 49.51 in the 400m followed by 54.08 and 53.71 in the 400m hurdles.
A pair of sub-50 second times were registered by Wilson in the NCAA Championships with a 49.36 in the prelims and a 49.64 in the final as runner-up to Adeleke’s 49.20. In the tightest time frame between events of the season, Wilson led the 400m hurdle field in the prelims with a 54.67, a full second faster than the second best time. In the final, following her runner-up in the 400m and the shorter schedule, a 55.92 placed Wilson seventh.
