Sánchez Cerqueira to Represent Spain at FIBA U18 3x3 World Cup

DEBRECEN, Hungary – Arkansas women’s basketball freshman Cristina Sánchez Cerqueira will represent her home country of Spain and the Razorbacks at the FIBA Women’s 3×3 U18 World Cup in Eastern Hungary. The games are set to begin Wednesday, Aug. 30 and carry on through Sunday, Sept. 3.

Sánchez Cerqueira and Spain, in Pool C, will kick off play on Thursday, Aug. 31 to play Lithuania at 10:55 a.m. CT/5:55 p.m. local time. Spain will then play Morocco at 12:45 p.m. CT/7:45 p.m. local time. On Saturday, Sept. 2, Spain will play Ukraine at 10:55 a.m. CT/5:55 p.m. local time followed by Japan at 2:10 p.m. CT/9:10 p.m. local time. The two top teams out of each pool will advance to play games on Sunday. The country that wins three games on Sunday will win the championship.

The 3×3 U18 women’s World Cup will feature 20 different countries. The pools are as follows:

Pool A: Egypt, China, Latvia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tunisia
Pool B: Germany, France, Brazil, USA, Hungary
Pool C: Ukraine, Japan, Lithuania, Spain, Morocco
Pool D: Thailand, Poland, Mongolia, Malaysia, Chinese Taipei

This is the second time in the past two months Sánchez Cerqueira is repping Team Spain, having played for her national team at the European Youth Olympic Festival 3×3 in Maribor, Slovenia last month. Sanchez singed with the Hogs in November 2022 and was on campus for the first week of school before heading back to Europe for the World Cup. Sánchez Cerqueira played in 26 games with Segle XXI this past year, averaging 6.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game. The Granada, Spain product logged 15 games with 5+ boards with Segle XXI in 2022-23. Sánchez Cerqueira earned gold and silver medals at the Andalucian Cup U14 and was chosen to play in the NBA Academy games in Atlanta.

Spain is coming off a bronze medal at the 2022 FIBA 3×3 World Cup and will look for it first gold since 2011. The country also won silver in 2012 and bronze in 2013 and 2016.

UP NEXT

Arkansas will begin official practices for the 2023-24 season at the end of September. Sánchez Cerqueira will return back to Fayetteville at the conclusion of the World Cup.
